I am horrified by news of the attack in Edinburgh.
I am grateful to the police and emergency services for their bravery in apprehending the suspect and for their speedy response in attending to the victims.
The suspect appears to be motivated by anti-Muslim hatred.
There is no place for hatred and violence against Muslims. I know it is not who we are as a country.
Congratulations to @AndyBurnhamGM elected as the @UKLabour and @CoopParty MP for Makerfield. 🌹🐝
I’m delighted the politics of division failed, and people voted for hope.
Credit to the thousands of members who campaigned in a fantastic constituency and for a great candidate.
Yorkshire County Cricket Club has been member-owned since 1863, with 33 county championships to its name in that time.
The argument that private ownership is needed to compete is contradicted by its proud record.
Howzat for a case against demutualisation?
Many of the people who keep our government running- cleaners, caterers, security staff, are outsourced workers. This has meant they can be overlooked and treated differently.
This is not fair and we are ending it.
Ten years on, Jo’s words continue to guide us:
“We are far more united and have far more in common than that which divides us.”
Today, we remember Jo’s life, her service, and the legacy she continues to inspire in communities across the UK and beyond.
#MoreInCommon
A record fine for sewage spills and shareholder payouts, nearly £20bn of debt, all added under private ownership.
Now, Thames Water is months from collapse.
This is more than a failure of management. It's a failure of ownership. There must be a better way.
"Britain’s crisis of trust will not be solved from Westminster. The answer lies in giving local communities greater power over their own future."
Read @SteveReedMP's article in the New Statesman today.
🚨 NEW: The government has today announced a £61 million Community Right to Buy Fund to help local people take ownership of the pubs, shops, community spaces and sports pitches that matter to them.
Extremists, algorithms & hostile states try to divide us, to turn us against each other. But we have don’t have to follow them. We can choose to talk to each other& focus on what we have in common
That’s what Jo would have done & it was a privilege to start this with @katieamess
A ban on social media for under-16s is the right step to protect young people and one I’ve called for.
But bans only treat the symptom, not the problem.
Social media companies need to re-imagine their platforms so they can offer a safe and healthy environment for all users, where restricting access wouldn’t be necessary.
There’s nothing inevitable about algorithms which feed us a diet of dangerous content. Londoners deserve platforms which prioritise people, not just profit.
Russia’s attack on Kyiv & across Ukraine last night killing civilians was barbarous.
Attacking the sacred Pechersk Lavra monastery, is a violation of faith & heritage. We fully endorse Ukraine's call for support from @UNESCO.
I conveyed our support to @r_stefanchuk today.

Reporting by @bbcnews Britain and its democracy is being targeted by foreign interests determined to destabilise our country.
“Russian operatives ran their sabotage and provocation campaign remotely through social media and the messaging app Telegram, we found, creating fake online far-right and Muslim groups, which were used to organise acts of vandalism in the UK and stir up division and fear.”
“Accounts based in Russia posted lies about the motive for the arson attacks targeting Starmer, which were spread by figures such as far-right anti-Islam activist Tommy Robinson.” @BBCNews

Co-operation builds something better, through shared experience, shared space, and shared ownership.
@andy4makerfield lays out that this is the heart of the campaign in Makerfield.
10 years ago my wife, the mum of our kids & the MP for Batley&Spen was killed by a far right extremist.
At anniversaries I try to be optimistic about the future. But not this time. In the ten years since she was killed we have gone backwards & I fear our democracy is now at risk
The proposals to protect young people against harm and exploitation on social media platforms is welcomed.
It has to be accompanied by robust regulation so that social media is a safe place for all users, hate and misinformation is properly dealt with, and we consider a fit and proper person test for platform owners.
Welcome the positive signs coming from Government on this.
Young people should be protected from the clear harms social media pose. Industry has had long enough to get its house in order, and the Online Safety Act doesn’t go far enough.
