Ethiopia has presented an ambitious plan to route its emerging oil and gas exports through Djibouti, deepening the two countries economic partnership. Under the proposal, Ethiopian natural gas and crude oil would reach global markets via Djibouti, while refined fuel would flow back into Ethiopia through a new pipeline network. The two-phase project, estimated to cost more than $10 billion, includes energy pipelines linking the Somali region of Ethiopia to Djibouti’s ports and could significantly reshape regional trade and strategic cooperation.

U.S. Secretary Rubio’s Met with Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gedion
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gedion Timotheos on the margins of the U.S.-Ethiopia Bilateral Structured Dialogue. The Secretary underscored Ethiopia’s important role in promoting the resolution and deescalation of conflict across East Africa. The Secretary and Foreign Minister also discussed the U.S.-Ethiopia security partnership and the significant steps taken to advance commercial opportunities between our nations. They additionally addressed Ethiopia’s access to the sea through Port of Assab, alongside matters concerning Eritrea and security developments in Sudan. Both leaders discussed about Eritrea’s sanctions status.
In their productive exchange, both sides reaffirmed the strong bilateral ties and explored ways to deepen cooperation on regional stability. The discussions highlighted shared interests in fostering peace and economic growth in the Horn of Africa, with a particular focus on practical measures to support Ethiopia’s maritime access needs while advancing security collaboration regarding Eritrea and Sudan.
