As part of upholding BETA and our promise to increase economic gains, livestock farmers will soon access the services of a state of the art leather district in Mavoko County which will enhance leather processing and increase economic viability of Kenyan leather products.

Early this morning, just before church, I carried out a random spot check in Kitui to check the availability of milk on the shelves of a retail outlet. I was pleased to note that supply is being restored.

I'm aware that this and other outlets may be unique cases of having normal supply and I want to assure Kenyans that the Government has the situation under control and we strive to see supplies restored countrywide.

To our farmers, we will continue supporting you to increase production, access reliable markets and earn better returns from your hard work.

Today, I joined Mutemi Mala and his family in Voo, Kitui East, to bid farewell to his three beloved children who tragically lost their lives after consuming maize suspected to have been contaminated with aflatoxin.

It was heartbreaking to witness the family lay three young lives to rest. Indeed, it was too much to bear.

This tragedy is a painful reminder of the importance of food safety. I urge the County Government and relevant regulatory bodies to strengthen vigilance and ensure food reaching our families is safe for human consumption.

May the souls of these three little angels rest in eternal peace.

I this morning inspected the ongoing construction of a modern Library and ICT Centre at Chuluni Girls High School, a personal initiative I am undertaking to give back to the community and create better opportunities for our girls.

Held successful empowerment and public engagement forums in Kanyangi, Kitui Rural and Kaliku, Kitui East.

I highlighted the progress of development programmes under the Kenya Kwanza Government, including Thwake Dam, now 95% complete. With KSh 10.5 billion recently released for the final works, the contractor is on site to ensure the project is completed soon.

In the livestock sector, alongside the construction of the Kitui Livestock Training Institute and Feedlot in Kitui Rural, the county will also benefit from the rollout of County Livestock Investment Companies (CLICs).

CLICs will bring farmers together, organise them into cooperatives and connect them to finance, markets and better opportunities for their livestock.

Officers from the State Department for Livestock Development will be in Kitui next month to train farmers, while nearly KSh 200 million will be invested by the Government in the people of Kitui to kick-start the initiative.

Embarked on mapping out areas where excess animal feed has been stored to counter the limited fodder situation.

This will help increase milk production as we continue to secure the supply.

Today, we engaged the Association of Dairy Processors in Kenya to find practical solutions to the current reduction in milk supply and ensure milk gets back to the shelves in adequate quantities and at fair prices.

The prolonged drought has put pressure on fodder and animal feed, contributing to a 3.7% decline in milk production between June and July. This is putting pressure on farmers, processors and ultimately consumers.

Our immediate focus is getting more feed to farmers, facilitating duty-free importation of yellow maize for animal feed, strengthening milk market monitoring and ensuring farmers receive a fair price for their milk.

We are also looking at long-term solutions, including a milk stabilisation mechanism, to manage periods of surplus and shortage, protect farmers from price fluctuations and build a more resilient dairy sector.

We are committed to supporting farmers, stabilising milk supply and protecting consumers.

Kenya’s livestock sector is steadily shifting from subsistence to a commercially driven industry under the leadership of PS Jonathan Mueke and the State Department for Livestock Development.

The numbers tell the story: meat exports have risen 87% to KSh16.4 billion, dairy exports have more than doubled to KSh12.4 billion, while milk production has grown to 5.4 billion litres.

The transformation is being driven by better genetics, disease control, traceability through ANITRAC and aggregation through County Livestock Investment Companies (CLICs).

With more than 18 million animals vaccinated* and KAGRC distributing 1.7 million doses of quality bull semen*, the foundation for a more productive, resilient and market-oriented livestock sector is being built.

The 5th Edition of the Kenya Meat Expo 🥩 is underway at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi, bringing together players from across the meat value chain.

The transition to quality-based milk payment is a major step in transforming Kenya’s dairy sector. Our farmers should be rewarded not just for the quantity of milk they produce, but for its quality.

For this system to work, we need skilled professionals who can test and assure milk quality. This is where the Dairy Training Institute (DTI), Naivasha is making a difference, equipping students with practical skills in milk quality testing, processing and quality assurance.

Quality-based payment will incentivise better milk production, strengthen value addition, create opportunities for skilled dairy professionals and position Kenya for premium local, regional and international markets.
