Sometimes in life you need to hit rock bottom in order to wake up to reality. This could be the driving force to propel you to greater things. Above all, a chance to reassess things and reorganize your life.
This generation has taken fitness very seriously, with a touch of unhealthy feeding habits too. Kwegamba it’s 50-50.

26/09/1996:My first day at the University!
On this day, around this time 30 years ago, I landed at Makerere University straight out of Bushenyi to begin my future. My journey started in Bushenyi in a taxi. I then jumped on a Steyr bus in Mbarara that brought me to Kampala. From the bus park, I went straight to campus. I arrived with only my suitcase, and bought most of the other stuff including beddings from the bazaars.
After that long journey, the ups and downs of registration, and then moving around an unfamiliar campus, shopping for utilities, by night time I was totally exhausted but very excited at what the future held.
As my roommates went out to the disco, I crashed straight into my bed until the following day. When I woke up, I attacked Makerere like a hungry hawker. I walked every corner of the university combing for OBs and friends. Along the way, I met my village mate nicknamed Sailor.
Boy we teamed up and attacked Makerere, the famous 24/7 Bermuda Triangle at Wandegeya, hostels, and even went to town. We were on top of the world and we walked on Kampala roads like the real lords. We returned to campus for dinner and stormed the Freshers’ Ball at the Guild Canteen. I returned to my room early in the morning the following day.
And that was our routine for most of the orientation week; we toured Kampala, explored every pocket of the university, and knocked on literally every door in the girls’ hostels. My bed hardly saw me. We sneaked in a few moments to finish all the registrations. As the week wore off, we became broke and it was also time to focus on studying.
My 3 years at campus is one of the most consequential periods of my life. I finished my undergraduate studies, made many friends that helped me in pursuit of my career, and I made the most important decision of my life, accepting Jesus as my Lord and savior. If it wasn’t for Jesus I don’t think I would be looking at this day the same way.
As we lace up for this year’s Makerere Run this weekend, I am also celebrating an anniversary of the impact the hill has had on my life.
