I'll never own a Tesla Roadster, but I'll cheer for it. As @ChuckCook says, like NASA's spin-offs, its ideas will reach industry and inspire young engineers. @larsmoravy's team built a mountain and climbed it, upside down. Their striving moves us all forward. @Tesla@SpaceX
@ChuckCook@Tesla Beautifully said, Chuck, and I wholeheartedly agree. I'll never own a Roadster, but I'll clap and cheer for those who do, because their striving moves us all forward. Can't wait for the stunt shows and the return of the American daredevil.
Having watched the @Tesla Roadster thrusters hiss and vent theatrical clouds of vapour, a question @rorysutherland:
How might railways benefit from bringing back steam engines, not everywhere, but on some days and routes, as unannounced surprises, to restore a bit of the lost magic? Run them on CNG so the air stays clean.
Behaviourally, optimised systems surely strip out sensory theatre and unpredictability? The hiss, the plume, the sense that something happened creates peak moments people talk about? Occasional, unannounced steam does the same: it turns a commodity journey into an event, without pretending to replace the everyday fleet? Magic is often cheaper than minutes.
@matthewsyed@nypost Courageous column, Matthew. You stand up for moderates of every faith and none: Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist and more. We mustn't be divided by hate of any kind. Black Box Thinking is a favourite of mine. If more people read it, the UK would be better for it.
Two machines from @elonmusk in a day:
Star Mind, a @SpaceX and @nvidia server for data centres in space, in volume production next year.
The @Tesla Roadster: 0-60 mph in a claimed 0.81s. His reply: "we can do better."
The car gets the headlines. Star Mind is the bigger story.
@randgroup@GregAbbott_TX It's a tragedy for the people of Europe who are capable of such marvels, they are simply being prevented from doing so. It makes me sad, so I try to focus on the magic like this.
@Teslaconomics Yes, because like all Tesla products from @woodhaus2 and @elonmusk and the team at @tesla it is not vulgar, but still dramatic. Like all Elon's products, the product and service speak for themselves.
@woodhaus2 What you and the team have created is not only a flying car, it is wonder and hope for people around the world that the seemingly impossible is possible, and that ordinary people can create extraordinary things.
The Roadster reveal was a sales masterclass.
Show, don't tell: it drove upside down and jumped the entire Tesla range.
Anchoring: 0-60 in 0.81s.
The decoy: Rocket makes the other two versions feel sensible.
Peak-end: it ended on the flight.
Anticipation: 2028, reservations open.
@Tesla@elonmusk
It drove upside down. It did aerobatic flips over a Semi and landed. 0-60 in 0.81 seconds, and Musk says the Rocket version can reach half the speed of sound.
A car company and a rocket company sharing a toolbox. After 8 years driving electric, the supercar argument is settled.

Jensen Huang on the UK, to @rowlsmanthorpe. The talent and universities are here. What we overthink is power: grid connections, substations, cooling. Take the step.
