Who are women's sports for? Daniel Kodsi (@dfkodsi) and I defend the unsurprising (but apparently controversial) answer that they are for women(!).

"Like scientific theorists and other decision makers, lawmakers do better to rely on natural, rather than gerrymandered, categories whenever possible. Statutes which exclude all males from female sports are justified in part because they respect this general constraint on good practical and theoretical reasoning. Potential alternative regimes which carve ad hoc exceptions into established protections for female sports are unjustified in part because they flagrantly violate it."
In brazenly self-deceived mode, one CCHQ staffer speculates loudly that the visible improvement in the attractiveness of the young men in attendance, as compared with last year, is a surefire indicator of a coming recovery in the party’s electoral fortunes.
I strain my eyes to see whether I can follow his reasoning. From what I see, I infer that the standalone moustache has finally made a fashion comeback (a long-awaited recovery, perhaps, in the face of the near-fatal countervailing influences on male grooming provided by AIDS and Adolf Hitler); but beyond that, little improvement is obvious.

“The Greens have always been a single-issue party — but recently, that single issue has morphed in surprising ways. Once the political home of well-intentioned (albeit eccentric) devotees of environmentalism, the party now serves as the political vehicle for a far more confused agenda: a mixture of hard-left economics, wayward forms of gender ideology and a pronounced hostility to Israel”

“That Amnesty would brand a charitable service for sexually abused women a “threat” to anyone’s rights only underscores the perverse logic of those in the grip of gender ideology.”

“Why are America’s political leaders so astonishingly geriatric?”
I read Samuel Moyn’s book, Gerontocracy, which manages to shed almost no new light on the answer, for @thetimes

“Meanwhile, not far from where I live in Washington, a huge wrestling stage was recently erected in front of the White House to celebrate, in characteristically dignified style, the 80th birthday of its occupant. Donald Trump, after Biden, is only the second president to enter his ninth decade while in office. To translate the abridged 2024 Trump-Biden showdown on to the British political timeline, it would be as if Neil Kinnock (84) and John Major (83) were still slugging it out over the dispatch box.”
