Memorial Day around the corner and found myself shooting the shit with some of the GWOT Gang. Crazy time and place to be a young man. A lot of it sucked, but there were moments...
@bog_beef Dude we had this Drill Sergeant in Basic who was balls-deep in that dichotomy.
Red-headed manlet who was the Lord's Own Badass. Hand got run over by a Bradley yet remained a PT stud. Drove a red new VW and had a big-ass Ranger tab taking up half the rear window next to a flower
@GraduatedBen A lot of old war pics hold up and have a gravity that more modern ones lack. I wonder if that's partly because uniforms had solid patterns until late Vietnam/Cold War or so, and made subjects easier on the eyes; whersas now w/modern patterns the eye wants to slide off. I dunno.
@GraduatedBen I can't help but wondering if uniform camo patterns play a tangential role also for war photos/film. I remember hearing a drama teacher explain how she recommended students use solid pattern clothing and background for their headshots so they don't disappear in the pics...
Driving. Square-Bodies were easier to come by in those days, and I got one at 16 as my 1st truck for $1600, paid for with my 1st job. I named her Maggie.
I'd get her out on the road, play the radio, roll the windows down, and be filled with that hope and expectation of the young
Irrespective of grand geopolitical circumstances beyond my control, I have a life that is unimaginably blessed and I think many of you do too. Don’t let yourselves get too wrapped up in these abstract events, at the end of the day they are beyond us.
@bog_beef That theme song tho. Just nasty with the swamp funk.
Jerry Reed was a savage. Went through a phase in high school where I just drove around in my truck wearing out his Greatest Hits cd
