The shared reflections by NOREC exchange fellows Derrick Chestit and Teresa Abel during the @Midrifthurinet leadership capacity-building program for Gender and OC Crimes Officers from 11 @NPSOfficial_KE stations within Starehe Sub-County, Nairobi County, offered a practice-oriented perspective on transforming policing through a human rights–based, community-focused approach.

Drawing on cross-regional exchange experiences and cultural learning in Uganda and South Africa, their engagement connected global normative standards with the real-life experiences of officers and communities in Starehe Sub-County, highlighting that effective policing is rooted in dignity, accountability, and meaningful partnerships with citizens.

Through discussions on laws protecting officers and the public, the evolving roles of police institutions, and the advantages of democratic and humanized policing, participants reflected on ongoing challenges to people-centred policing in Kenya, including gaps in trust, systemic pressures, and barriers to inclusive engagement.

The fellows’ presentations highlighted practical pathways forward, such as fostering ongoing dialogue, integrating human rights principles into daily policing, investing in leadership development, and repositioning communities as key beneficiaries of accountability and peacebuilding.

By grounding knowledge in lived experience and shared best practices, the sessions emphasized the importance of collaborative learning as a driver for institutional reform, better police–citizen trust, and a more responsive, inclusive, and peaceful approach to public safety.

With support from the Civil Peace Service (CPS) of GIZ, @Midrifthurinet’s Multisectoral Coordination and Collaboration Forum on Peace and Security, targeting participants from Nakuru Town East and Nakuru Town West, adopts a strategic, collaborative communication approach to strengthen community resilience through dialogue, shared responsibility, and youth-led engagement.

Gathering National Government Administrative Officers ( @ngaosKE ) representatives, Sub-County security committees, Media practitioners, county officials, Youth champions, peace actors, and community members, the forum addresses real governance and security gaps, from delayed risk detection and fragmented stakeholder coordination to low youth participation, weak reporting cultures, and trust deficits between institutions and citizens.

Through clear messaging and inclusive participation, the engagement emphasizes establishing an election-focused Early Warning Early Response (EWER) mechanism, improving information sharing, and expanding youth-friendly reporting platforms that empower young people to advocate for peace, accountability, and electoral reforms.

By shifting from reactive crisis management to preventive, community-driven approaches, the forum positions communication as a tool for peacebuilding, building credibility, and encouraging consistent public engagement that leads to increased awareness, responsible civic action, and measurable improvements in conflict reporting and response.

This collaborative process promotes a culture of transparency, security, and community ownership, where youth voices are recognized as key contributors in shaping a more peaceful, accountable, and participatory electoral environment across Nakuru County.

During the Reflections from the Multisectoral Coordination and Collaboration Forum on Peace and Security for Nakuru Town East and Nakuru Town West, Stakeholders explored practical pathways for participation in EWER structures, deeper involvement of community actors, and clearer navigation of security protocols, while highlighting the growing nexus between technology and security agencies as a catalyst for faster, transparent information sharing.

The dialogue emphasized the importance of neutral and responsible media practice, collective responses to emerging peace and security concerns, including hate speech as an early warning indicator and human-wildlife conflict, and innovative community engagement through peace tournaments and youth-led initiatives ahead of the elections.

Participants also stressed operationalizing peace committees in underserved areas to ensure grassroots ownership of prevention efforts.

The reflections demonstrate how credible messaging, youth advocacy, and collaborative action can transform shared information into measurable impact, enhancing awareness, strengthening trust, and empowering communities to actively shape safer, more accountable, and resilient democratic spaces.

I’ve spent my life building industries. But factories can be copied. Deals can be replicated. Capital can be replaced. What cannot be replaced… is leadership. That’s why I didn’t raise heirs. I raised architects. Not for fame. Not for inheritance. But for responsibility.
You see! the factories you see today are not the end of my legacy.
They are simply the training ground for those who will build beyond.

It needs trained transformers. “No reality TV. No scandals. No noise. Just execution. My daughters are rewriting what it means to inherit power in Africa.” Because true succession is not DNA. It’s discipline. It’s not inheritance. It’s institution-building.
If my legacy stops with me... then I have failed. “The real case study isn’t my billions. It’s how I raised leaders instead of dependents, because Africa doesn’t need princesses. It needs architects. And my daughters might be exactly that.”
Legacy isn’t what you leave to your children. It’s what you build through them. Dangote understood that.”
That’s why every African entrepreneur should ask themselves: Have I built wealth… or have I built continuity? Will my children be beneficiaries, or builders?
I didn’t raise princesses. I raised a strategy team. And together, we are executing one question for Africa: What does it take to build an economy that survives its founders? If Africa answers that question — truly answers it... Then no speech, no summits, no billionaire will ever be needed again.
That is the real vision. That is the real succession. And that is my real business plan.

The stakeholder inception meeting for the @Midrifthurinet and @SOSCVKenya Buruburu Peace and Social Cohesion through sports project marked a transformative moment of collective intent, bringing together actors from national and county governments, community structures, local organizations, and sports academies, and was inspired by former Harambee Stars captain Musa Otieno.

In a dialogue grounded in shared purpose, stakeholders embraced the project's vision of using sports as a catalyst for children and young people's empowerment, psychosocial wellbeing, and peaceful coexistence, recognizing that play can open doors where words alone sometimes fail.

The meeting not only fostered community buy-in but also laid the groundwork for a multisectoral framework that unites health, protection, sports, and social development actors in a coordinated effort.

Each commitment, voiced by government officials to grassroots leaders, reflected a deep belief that when young people are supported through inclusive, structured sports activities, they gain life skills, confidence, and pathways out of vulnerability.

The gathering reaffirmed that this project is about building a community ecosystem where every child and young person is safe, seen, and supported to thrive.

Prevention of Violent Extremism #PVE is essential as we approach the general elections, calling for the establishment of strong early warning and response mechanisms.
Today, we began our 3-day exchange visit in Nakuru County, hosted by @Midrifthurinet, an organization instrumental in advancing PVE initiatives in the region.
