This is often called the "money shot" or iconic flaming faucet scene, used to illustrate alleged water contamination from nearby hydraulic fracturing (fracking) operations. Key context on the scene: It was real in the sense that the water did burn — Methane (natural gas) in the water supply made it flammable.

However, investigations by Colorado regulators (e.g., Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission) determined the methane was naturally occurring biogenic gas from coal seams, predating any drilling in the area. Residents had reported flammable tap water for decades (as far back as the 1930s in some cases), unrelated to fracking.

The film attributes it to nearby gas development, which critics (including in documentaries like FrackNation and reports from Energy in Depth) argue is misleading.

This scene became a cultural touchpoint in debates over fracking, even as follow-up analyses (including from state regulators and later EPA reviews) found no widespread systemic fracking-related contamination of drinking water in the portrayed
