A stark reminder that Congress and a federal prosecutor - not the residents of DC - define who our kids are in the District. There is not a shred of evidence that this will improve public safety. To the contrary, the evidence shows that this will be harmful & counterproductive.
@MoCoPGNews police already say they don’t have enough officers, decades of research and recent experience in PGCo show us it yields very little outcomes.
And anyone who knows me knows how hard it is for me to LISTEN! 🙂Seriously, this has been a great experience. After 43 yrs in this field, I'm still learning a ton.
Bobby Bostic was sentenced to 241 years in Missouri prison for an armed robbery at 16. After 27 years, he has been freed under a law recently passed granting early parole eligibility to those who committed their crimes as children. This is why we fight for human rights for kids.
One of my goals as a crim law prof: eradicate use of the word "only" when speaking of prison sentences. Too many folks casually say "only 10/15/20 years." There is no such thing as "only" time in prison. We can fight about what time is warranted, but it's all HARD time.

Black History You Should Know: In 1918 Marcus Garvey, black nationalist & Pan-Africanist leader, founded The Negro World newspaper. It was published weekly in Harlem & distributed in 40+ countries. Contributors included Zora Neale Hurston & Carter G. Woodson. (@WashingtonLatin)
This weekend, the @washingtonpost editorial board endorsed Maryland’s Juvenile Restoration Act (HB 409/SB 494). The bill would create an opportunity for judicial review after 20 years of incarceration to those sentenced as youth.

I wrote about how this photo captured the divide between who America purports to be and who we have actually been, the gap between our founding promises and our current reality. How so much of our country’s history was reflected in a single image.
