Disaster-related rumors spread at an alarming speed on social media. This compounds the challenges of emergency responders.
RAND experts developed a checklist for anyone interested in countering the disaster rumor mill during an emergency. https://t.co/V4g7qoNaQC
That's because this has been an all hands on deck response from Wawa associates, from the stores, Red Roof headquarters, and our vendor partners. Unbelievable work!
Hey @Wawa
Want to throw big props to your store in New Port Richey FL on SR-54. There’s limited gas all over the region because of #HurricaneMilton but your staff had the gas lines running smoothly and orderly. Great job! #Wawa

Many stores open as of ~2300ET to support Florida in last evacuation preparations. Remarkable work by our associates.
Our #whindex status maps reflect our closures as of 2pm today in advance of #HurricaneMilton. More updates to come. Please stay safe.
**Due to the potential for variations in Milton's path, this information is subject to change without notice. Please follow local guidance.
There has been a lot of rumors spreading about the #Helene response.
Rumors can create confusion & prevent people from getting assistance they need. Help us share accurate information: https://t.co/Z5vxuBTths
I'm sure the impending election and other domestic and global events occurring simultaneously haven't helped things but this #TruthDecay behavior is highly concerning. Please share the facts:

The private sector has been out in force to support disaster survivors across the southeast. But I'm most proud to see @Wawa supporting my fellow emergency managers working behind the scenes at the @FLSERT EOC. Coffee truck has also been deployed to Taylor & Lafayette counties
Thank you @Wawa for generously providing coffee ☕️ to those working around the clock at the Florida Emergency Operations Center @FLSERT to provide resources and support to the communities impacted by Hurricane Helene.
@therobdale Correct. If you are testing the tool and interface, the language included doesn't matter. It's insane to introduce that kind of risk for no reason.
If you're testing the creation of ad hoc message language, do it far away from your messaging platform.
One of my EM pet peeves is when people use actual hazard language in emergency notification tests (or in this case press releases). There's absolutely no reason whatsoever to place hazard language into tests being done in a production environment.
This I can't get mad at. 🤣
I don't know if this was supposed to be sent internally as a joke, but FEMA sent this to our Hearst DC Bureau:
FEMA announced that federal disaster assistance is available to the state of Texas to supplement recovery efforts in the areas affected by the New Orleans Saints on Sept. 15, 2024.
From a person that obsesses over concepts like #LinkRot this is huge news. I was upset when Google removed the cached version of pages from their results. Hopefully this gives some more visibility to the important work the Internet Archive does to save the history of the internet
