Over the past three days, KeNIA has been working with Board Directors from State Corporations in a focused capacity-building programme to strengthen their understanding, governance, and integration of innovation at the highest level of our public institutions.

The training covered innovation strategy, board governance, innovation mindset, ISO 56001:2024, leadership and culture, citizen-centric innovation, and measuring innovation performance. We also got a chance to conduct a sensitisation on KeNIA's Public Sector Innovation Maturity Framework (PSIMF).

This initiative is part of KeNIA’s broader strategic approach to building innovation-ready public institutions. Through the PSIMF, KeNIA will continue to support State Corporations to assess and strengthen their innovation capabilities, integrate innovation into their operations and embed innovation in how they deliver services to Kenyans. We are committed to build a public sector that is more adaptive, responsive and continuously finding better ways to serve Kenyans.

Yesterday, we officially kicked off an important capacity-building initiative aimed at strengthening the ability of Board Directors and CEOs across Kenya’s State Corporations to lead and manage innovation for better organisational performance.

Kenya is at a point where innovation can no longer be left to a few people or treated as an ICT function. It has to be part of how our public institutions are governed, led and managed.

At KeNIA, we are rolling out the Public Sector Innovation Maturity Framework (PSIMF), a practical framework that helps public institutions understand where they are on their innovation journey, identify gaps and put in place the structures and capabilities needed to build a culture of continuous innovation.

We have already trained the teams responsible for driving innovation within institutions. The next step is taking the conversation to the boardroom.

Why? Because Boards set the strategic direction. They influence culture, resources, champion new ideas and create the environment in which innovation can either thrive or stall.

This is therefore important because it is about strengthening the leadership and governance needed to build more adaptive, innovative and results-oriented public institutions.

At KeNIA, our ambition is clear: to help build a public sector that does not just respond to change, but anticipates it, innovates around it and turns it into better outcomes for Kenyans.

Strengthening Kenya’s position in global innovation networks requires strategic connections that link local innovators and enterprises to international technology, expertise, investment, and markets. It is against this background that the Kenya National Innovation Agency (KeNIA) engaged the Director of the Exchange and Cooperation Division at the Korea-Africa Foundation, Mr. Jongkil Lee, to explore opportunities for deepening Kenya–South Korea collaboration in innovation, technology, and enterprise development.
The discussions examined pathways for Kenyan innovators and enterprises to access South Korean technologies, expertise, strategic partnerships, investment, and markets. These linkages will accelerate technology adoption, enhance enterprise capabilities, and support the commercialisation and scaling of Kenyan innovations.
KeNIA also engaged South Korean startups participating in the Global Markets Expansion Program, exploring opportunities to connect them with Kenyan startups, innovators, investors, and other ecosystem stakeholders. The proposed linkages will facilitate knowledge exchange, technology collaboration, investment, and access to new markets.
The engagements underscore KeNIA’s strategic approach to positioning Kenya within global innovation networks and creating opportunities for international collaboration to accelerate technology adoption, enterprise growth, and market access. Kenya’s vision of becoming a globally competitive, innovation-driven economy requires strong entrepreneurial institutions capable of nurturing ideas, supporting venture creation, and accelerating pathways from innovation to impact.

Recognising this need, KeNIA engaged with the UK Tech Hub, Anza Village, and NEIL to explore opportunities for strengthening the Start-up School through strategic partnerships, mentorship, expertise sharing, and sustainable support mechanisms.

The engagement highlighted opportunities to enhance startup development through venture-building approaches, structured mentorship, and collaborative support systems that connect innovators with relevant expertise and resources. Discussions also explored potential pathways for catalytic support, including the Kenya Catalytic Jobs Fund, which focuses on advancing and evaluating innovations with the potential to contribute to large-scale job creation, particularly among young people and vulnerable groups.

The discussions identified opportunities to leverage technical assistance, potential financing pathways, and evidence-based approaches to strengthen startup support models, enhance entrepreneurial capacity, and advance solutions with meaningful economic impact.
