I’ll never forget what happened on this day one year ago. The moments before the first tornado tore through our community and moved on to neighboring counties. The moments in between the storms as I huddled with first responders from every agency in the county. And the moments after the storms ended, when everyone came together in a manner that I’d never seen before.

Loved ones were lost; homes and businesses ravaged. Despite the heartache and destruction, I saw a community rally and leap to help. Fear and anxiety reigned in the early morning hours that day, but those feelings pale in comparison to the gratitude and pride I felt in the days and weeks that followed.

May we continue to be good neighbors to one another, in good times and bad.

Anyone who knows me well knows that I love The West Wing. I’ve watched it more than I should admit (sorry @TravisTBurton ). Of course the politics are interesting, it’s written beautifully and the acting is great. Sure, things are romanticized and there are probably too many happy endings. But the cast also tackled real challenges and faced insurmountable odds.

It was after reading What’s Next that I realized exactly why I love the show so much. This book goes way behind the scenes and in depth about the cast, the crew and the writers. It highlights the staff in The West Wing more than the President, humble people doing all they can to make their country better. Just like the amazing people I get to work with everyday. Ordinary folks doing extraordinary things. I’ve always said I work alongside the best team in the state. Reading this book made me appreciate them even more than I already did. I hope our community knows just how special they are!
