Last night, another packed Grayslake board meeting had residents and allies from across Lake County demanding action be taken to stop the T5 hyperscale data center.

The village board limited comments and had police escort away commenters who went over the two minute limit. After Mayor Elizabeth Davies ended the meeting before all Grayslake residents present could speak, one resident took to the microphone to give her comments anyway. Community members formed a wall around her so she could give it without interruption by police.

Big tech and the billionaires pushing data centers into our communities may have the money, but our communities have the people power. We can organize together to win a society for the workers, not the billionaires.

At least five tankers carrying around 3.84 million barrels of crude oil, gasoil, and naphtha from key Saudi terminals Yanbu and Jizan were forced to urgently change their routes: four of them turned around within the Red Sea waters, while one did so outside, in the Gulf of Aden. The fact that a vessel, which was in ballast on a route from China to Canada, turned around in the Gulf of Aden clearly demonstrates that shipowners and insurers consider the entire approach to Bab-el-Mandeb, rather than just the Red Sea itself, as a deadly risk zone.

❗️The variety of cargoes and destinations underscores the systemic nature of risk avoidance, ultimately undermining Riyadh's plan to use the East-West pipeline and Red Sea ports as a safe bypass for the vulnerable Strait of Hormuz. The actions of the Houthis have effectively turned the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea into a zone of complete access denial (A2/AD) for Saudi exports, which inevitably leads to the redirection of raw material flows around Africa via the Cape of Good Hope, an explosive increase in insurance rates, and another round of rising costs in global energy logistics.
