Social needs may be an important part of the acute-to-chronic pain story.
In first-year findings from our PREVENT cohort, ED patients reporting multiple social needs had substantially higher adjusted anxiety and depressive symptoms, pain catastrophizing, and disability compared with patients reporting no social needs.
Importantly, these estimates were adjusted for age, gender, race, ethnicity, and current pain intensity.
These findings reinforce the importance of considering the broader biopsychosocial context when trying to understand recovery after acute musculoskeletal pain—and may help inform how we identify and support patients at risk for persistent pain after ED discharge.
Our first-year PREVENT manuscript has been published open access by the @CambridgeCore Journal of Clinical & Translational Science.

@MitoPsychoBio@NTFabiano Wait….what? Seriously? I was diagnosed with a primary mitochondrial disease in 2021 at the age of 51. I’ve saved the link to your paper.
@paintoolkit & I offer our limited experience with AI & thoughts on how it can be beneficial for people living with pain & other long-term health issues. The AI landscape is developing extremely fast. Where will it go & how fast will it get there? We’d love to hear your thoughts.
@keith_meldrum It’s a beautiful beach & the whole area has stellar scenes! This is from my family’s cottage on the lake - those whipped up waves are what prompted my dad & mum to take a risk & build there - it reminded my parents of the ocean & home they left in Ireland
@ChrisWalkerCBC The leader of the USA (I choose not to mention his name) appears to be spiralling. Claiming they lose money by trading with Canada & Mexico & that they will make billions by ending trade. Expressing outrage at the value of our dollar. And still more. Bizarre.
For this Sundays ‘In Conversation’ with myself and Keith Meldrum - the topic will be…👇
“The real cost of living with persistent pain.”

@sunsopeningband There is work underway in Canada (and the US I assume) on a trial for those with mitochondrial disease. I will be enrolled to see if I am a candidate. Links for info:

Finally, a mostly clear day and evening without wildfire smoke to be able to sit on the back porch and enjoy a warm 27° C (81° F) evening.
