Thank you, Kelly! Our organization has been working for years to shut down these deadly carriages, and as you know, many horses have collapsed and died while pulling carriages and we’ve been warning that it was only a matter of time before a human was killed. The carriage drivers are still behaving in exactly the same way that led to the death of Romanch, leaving their horses unattended, even with children and babies in the back.

The attached video was filmed on July 14. It shows a carriage driver leaving his horse completely unattended in traffic, with passengers still in the carriage, including a TODDLER, so he could walk away to take photos. This is not only a violation of the law, it is a reckless disregard for the lives of everyone involved. On a busy New York City street filled with traffic, noise, sirens, horns, and countless other frightening stimuli, a horse can spook and bolt in a split second. Had that happened, the toddler and the rest of the family could have been thrown from the carriage, while anyone in the horse’s path could have been seriously injured or killed.

This is exactly the same behavior that led to the death of Romanch Mahajan. It is not an isolated incident. It is standard operating procedure. Visit Central Park on any given day and you will see carriage drivers leaving their horses unattended over and over again. We have so much other footage likt this No amount of regulation can change a culture that has operated this way for decades. I it needs to end before another avoidable tragedy occurs.

The horses escape a lot and run into traffic/etc. I wish they could make it seasonal/limited time! But nobody seems to even entertain that idea
