DIASPORA CALLED TO INVEST, TRADE AND BUILD BRIDGES FOR KENYAN BUSINESSES

The KNCCI Multi Sector Trade Mission to Canada opened on Saturday with a call for Kenyans in the diaspora to invest, trade and act as bridges for Kenyan businesses entering the Canadian market.

KNCCI, with the Canadian Black Chamber of Commerce, Nexus Global Strategies, the Kenya Community in Ontario and the Kenyans in Diaspora Investment Club, hosted a Diaspora Investment Forum in Toronto attended by more than 200 members of the Kenyan diaspora and business stakeholders.

Discussions covered investing in Canada, investing back in Kenya and turning diaspora presence into real market access for Kenyan products, with calls for credible, transparent investment channels.

The delegation was led by John Shimaka, National Director of KNCCI; Ambassador Isaiah Kabira, Secretary for Investments, Skills and Entrepreneurship and Acting CEO of the Diaspora Placement Agency; and Professor Elijah Songok Martim, CEO of the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI). They highlighted the diaspora's role in Kenya's development through remittances, investment and networks. Shimaka thanked attendees and encouraged them to invest in Kenya and join KNCCI.

The forum highlighted the importance of Diaspora in investments and market access for Kenyan products into new markets.

As the mission continues in Toronto and Ottawa, KNCCI aims to turn these conversations into lasting Kenya Canada business and investment partnerships.

KNCCI President Dr. Erick Rutto hosted H.E. Sahak Sargsyan, the Armenian Ambassador to Kenya, to discuss strengthening trade between the two countries.

Current Trade
Kenya exports: Black tea, fresh cut roses, and specialty coffee.

Armenia exports: Beverages, gaming technology, minerals, spirits, fine textiles, and medical or optical equipment.

Key Focus Areas for Future Growth
To boost low trade numbers, both leaders highlighted three major areas to focus on:
Tech-driven logistics and smart supply chains

Agricultural processing and local manufacturing for export

Engaging the diaspora to encourage new investments

Next Steps & Collaboration

Quarterly Meetings: The Armenian Embassy and KNCCI will meet every three months to organize online business-to-business (B2B) networking events for companies in both nations.

Embassy & Partnership: Dr. Rutto encouraged Armenia to open a physical embassy in Kenya and proposed signing a formal agreement (MoU) between the two chambers of commerce.

Summit Invitation: Dr. Rutto invited Armenian business leaders and commercial officials to attend the Africa Commerce & Industry Summit (ACIS 2026), held October 14–16, 2026, at Uhuru Gardens in Nairobi.

As part of the Kenya–Canada Trade and Investment Mission in Toronto, Amb. Isaiya Kabira, Secretary for Diaspora Investments, Skills and Entrepreneurship, engaged members of the Kenyan diaspora in Canada on their strategic role in advancing Kenya's economic development through investment, trade, innovation, skills transfer, and entrepreneurship.

He encouraged the diaspora to leverage their networks, expertise, and resources to create opportunities, attract investment, support enterprise, and facilitate technology and knowledge transfer back home. Amb. Kabira further urged them to serve as a bridge between Canada and Kenya by harnessing Canadian technology, expertise, and innovation, while exploring investment and business opportunities in Kenya.

The Ambassador also highlighted the Diaspora Investment Support Office (DISO), a dedicated one-stop centre designed to address the specific investment needs of Kenyans abroad.

On remittances, Amb. Kabira recognised their significant contribution to Kenya's economy and development, while encouraging the diaspora to invest across various sectors at both national and county levels. He pointed to opportunities such as Government Infrastructure Bonds, accessible through the DhowCSD platform, as avenues through which the diaspora can invest while contributing to national development.

The Kenyan diaspora is a vital source of capital, skills, knowledge, innovation, and enterprise capable of driving Kenya's economic transformation.

*KENYA–YUNNAN ECONOMIC MATCHMAKING CONFERENCE*

The Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) President Dr. Erick Rutto, participated in the Kenya–Yunnan Economic Matchmaking Conference aimed at strengthening trade, investment and business partnerships between Kenya and Yunnan Province, China.

Dr. Rutto highlighted the significant opportunities for collaboration within the coffee value chain, bringing together Kenya’s globally recognized premium Arabica coffee and Yunnan’s growing expertise in coffee production, processing, technology, trading and consumption.

The discussions focused on key areas of cooperation, including direct sourcing of Kenyan coffee, investment in local coffee processing and value addition, joint ventures, specialty coffee branding, coffee technology and machinery, research and knowledge exchange, farmer capacity building, e-commerce and digital marketing.

The meeting also explored opportunities to expand cooperation beyond coffee into agricultural technology and machinery, tea, macadamia and avocado value addition, logistics and cold-chain infrastructure, and technical and vocational training.

KNCCI highlighted its commitment to serving as a bridge between Kenyan and Yunnan businesses by facilitating business-to-business matchmaking, investment linkages, market information, business delegations and connections with Kenyan producers, cooperatives, processors and exporters.

The engagement underscored the importance of moving beyond traditional trade towards long-term investment partnerships that promote value addition, technology transfer, job creation and improved incomes for farmers and businesses in both Kenya and China.

KNCCI PARTICIPATION AT THE KENYA–CHINA BUSINESS FORUM

The Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) participated in the Kenya–China Business Forum and the official opening of the 9th Kenya International Industrial Expo and Kenya Investment and Trade Fair 2026, represented by its National Director, Mr. Mutavi Kithu.

The event brought together government representatives, investors, manufacturers, exhibitors, and business leaders to promote trade, investment, technology transfer, and industrial cooperation between Kenya and China.

In his remarks, Mr. Kithu highlighted KNCCI’s commitment to supporting businesses through market linkages, investment opportunities, capacity building, and strategic partnerships across the 47 counties. He also recognized KNCCI members participating in the Expo and encouraged businesses to explore new markets and partnerships.

Other speakers included Mr. Gao Wei, Managing Director of Afripeak Expo (Kenya) Ltd; Mr. Hu Jieguo, Honorary Vice Chairman of the China–Africa Business Council; and Mr. Pius Rotich, Director of Manufacturing and Investment at the Kenya Investment Authority (Invest Kenya). Their remarks emphasized the importance of Kenya–China cooperation, local manufacturing, investment, technology transfer, and job creation.

The event concluded with the official opening of the Expo, providing a platform for businesses to showcase their products and services, establish partnerships, and explore opportunities for trade and investment.

KNCCI KISII DINNER & INVESTMENT FORUM 2026

The KNCCI Kisii Dinner & Investment Forum 2026 brought together business leaders, investors, entrepreneurs, government representatives and stakeholders from Kisii and neighbouring counties for an evening of networking, investment conversations and partnerships.

The forum was graced by H.E. Elijah Obebo, Deputy Governor of Kisii County, as the Chief Guest of Honour, alongside KNCCI Chamber President Dr. Erick Rutto, Kisii County Commissioner James Kamau, National Director Eng. Ken Onditi, MBS, WIB Chair Zainab Mohammed, and business leaders from across the region.

Discussions focused on unlocking Kisii’s economic potential through value addition, investment, market expansion and creating an enabling environment for businesses and MSMEs to thrive.

Today, KNCCI hosted a farewell breakfast for members embarking on the Kenya-Canada Multisector Trade Mission to Ottawa and Toronto. Led by KNCCI CEO KK Mutai alongside Diaspora Committee Chairman Simon Nyaga and Labour Migration Committee Chairman John Shimaka, the session gave delegates a chance to network and run through essential travel logistics—including airport transfers, luggage safety, weather-appropriate attire, train bag limits, currency exchange, and health insurance—ensuring a smooth and enjoyable trip.

CEO KK Mutai encouraged the 40-member delegation to seize the opportunity, build meaningful partnerships, and close business deals. He noted that while KNCCI serves as a convener, the responsibility falls on the delegates to actively expand their networks. He also highlighted Canada’s large Kenyan diaspora as a valuable source of capital and local partnership for market entry.

Representing key sectors such as tea, coffee, horticulture, textiles, labor mobility, and education, the delegation will participate in the trade mission from September 6 to 12, 2026.

KNCCI Holds Diplomatic Engagement on Economic Strategy
On 1 September 2026, KNCCI hosted a briefing for Heads of Mission. Marking 60 years since its founding in 1965, KNCCI highlighted its devolved network across 47 counties and its role in connecting MSMEs to global trade.
The presentation detailed key impact metrics and strategic goals such as MSME Support, Advocacy Priorities and the announced the Africa Commerce & Industry Summit (ACIS 2026) Flagship Event .
KNCCI President Dr. Erick Rutto emphasized shifting diplomacy from generic relationships to structured, outcome-oriented economic value:
· Economic Landscape: Highlighted Kenya’s real GDP growth reaching 5.3% in early 2026 and merchandise exports totaling KSh 118 billion in June 2026. Africa remains Kenya's largest export market, accounting for KSh 452.8 billion in 2025.
· Five Pillars of Collaboration: Urged envoys to partner on Market Intelligence, Investment Attraction, Export Development, Business Corridors, and Measurable Outcomes.
· Core Objective: Called for moving "from relationships to partnerships; from partnerships to transactions; and from transactions to lasting economic impact".
Ambassadors' Feedback & Strategic Directives
During the interactive session, diplomatic envoys provided feedback on execution and policy alignment:
· Activating Signed MOUs: Ambassadors explicitly called on KNCCI to ensure all signed MOUs transition into active, functional commercial channels to maximize tangible returns for Kenyan businesses.
· State Department & Chamber Coordination:Recommended establishing mandatory quarterly meetings between KNCCI and the State Department for Foreign Affairs to synchronize bilateral commercial goals.
· Market Intelligence Exchange: Agreed on continuous, bi-directional sharing of market intelligence and data between embassies and KNCCI to identify trade barriers and demand.
· Strategic Economic Engagement: Emphasized building long-term country-to-country business corridors over ad-hoc delegations to sustain trade growth and investment flows.
