This Friday, Guillermo Del Toro (@RealGDT) joins my film podcast to talk about his incredible career and the incredible process behind the 3D conversion for the 20th anniversary of Pan’s Labyrinth.
I was just sitting here rewatching Pacific Rim. One of my favorite films. I’m always in awe of visual effects. Jaw-dropping. Looks absolutely phenomenal all these years later. You can feel the height & weight of the film. There’s just something so immersive about the scale that truly makes you believe this is how it would be experienced in the real world. Guillermo Navarro’s cinematography is beautiful. 1.78 aspect ratio, for the home viewing, is stunning. Ramin Djawadi’s score is fantastic. It’s become comfort viewing for me. Every time I watch it, I feel
the exact awe at the filmmaking that I did, sitting in a theatre, back in 2013. It’s a reminder of why I love movies and why the magic of filmmaking can still surprise you even after watching a film multiple times.
Tom Cruise says he doesn’t make movies for opening weekend. His focus is on the evolution & lasting legacy of a film. #Digger is such a remarkable film directed by the brilliant Alejandro G. Iñárritu. Saw it for a 3rd time this weekend; this time in glorious 35mm VistaVision.
Thank you so much to @TomCruise and Alejandro G. Iñárritu for joining my podcast and for the incredibly kind words. Surreal. We did an hour long filmmaking chat surrounding Digger and their incredible careers. Part 1 is streaming now and is completely spoiler-free. ❤️🎥🎞️
😂😂😂 Zach Cregger on how he’s been attempting to pay homage to the fire extinguisher scene in Gaspar Noé’s Irreversible. Says he tried in Weapons & Barbarian, which were great scenes. He will try again in the Spielberg/Amblin produced film, The Flood. Can’t wait to see this.
The art of the movie title card reveal. In Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil, the title is revealed 18-minutes into the film. This lead to a discussing about title reveals in films like the Coen Brothers’ Raising Arizona and the Gaspar Noé film, Climax. Fav title reveal?
Tom Cruise and I geeked out about cinematography while standing with the Beaumont Vista Vision camera that Emmanuel Lubezki used for Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s ‘DIGGER’. I can’t believe that’s a real sentence. Talking lenses, lighting and large format. That camera is so stunning.
“…he was the only actor who didn’t bail on me.”
Austin Abrams on why he didn’t exit Weapons after Zach Cregger lost his original cast.
P.S. Cregger’s Resident Evil is awesome. The IMAX aspect ratio shift is worth seeing in that format. Really great filmmaking & performances.
Steven Spielberg and my childhood ticket stubs. Surreal. I still can’t comprehend that this was the 10th time I’ve spoken to Mr. Spielberg. For context on the ratings, earlier in the conversation he was telling me the classic story of helping to create the PG-13 rating.
R-Rated movies. Sleepovers. M-Rated video games. Physical media. Analog. Is this nostalgia or a longing for community and a feeling of ownership over the media we consume? Mason Gooding is the latest guest to join my “On Film…With Kevin McCarthy” podcast.
How Elliot Page and Leonardo DiCaprio filmed those two iconic moments in Christopher Nolan’s INCEPTION. Clip from my “On Film…With Kevin McCarthy” podcast.
Tom Cruise and I geeking out about the Beaumont VistaVision camera that Emmanuel Lubezki used to film Alejandro González Iñárritu’s DIGGER. #tomcruise@TomCruise
Wow. Marvel considered horizontalizing the Dutch (canted) angles in Kenneth Branagh’s THOR but it ended up being too expensive. I love the canted angles in that film. Thoughts?
