So why haven't we bent the emissions curve in 30 years?
We conclude power concentrated in 'elites' is a major obstacle to change https://t.co/X9VMGrXZNU

[Tzeporah Berman @Tzeporah]

I’m so disappointed.

Last year, Andy Burnham stood alongside Massive Attack and called the #FossilFuelTreaty a “lifeline.”

He urged governments to end coal, oil and gas expansion and hold polluters accountable.

Yesterday, his government approved a new North Sea gas field. 🧵

[Kevin Anderson @KevinClimate]

@deplorabristol What a load of childish nonsense.

[Kevin Anderson @KevinClimate]

@LaneyGH Dodgy people in all walks - & some are anonymous cowards - inspector clouseau.

Jackdaw: a decision for last century. https://t.co/Vd3FZR7F65

A hastily drafted post following the UK Govt’s decision to approve further drilling & production at the Jackdaw gas field in the N.Sea. Please excuse typos, non-sequiturs, etc - I wanted to get the post online today.

[Kevin Anderson @KevinClimate]

@LaneyGH Don’t judge everyone by your own absence of moral code. £28k/yr before tax - & I take no other fees for consultancy, presentations, legal advice etc.

[Kevin Anderson @KevinClimate]

@AlanDobson6 Why?

[Kevin Anderson @KevinClimate]

@rosssco81 How’s that relate to Jackdaw, rather than just gas supply?

[Kevin Anderson @KevinClimate]

@dngrfld Ta for the thoughtful insight.

[Kevin Anderson @KevinClimate]

@nickstew_art Which country is going to cut production to compensate for the UK’s increase? Jackdaw means additional gas production & emissions, not substitution.

Worse, it sends a dangerous signal: backsliding on climate commitments is acceptable, provided you dress it up as “pragmatism”.

[Fossil Free London @fossilfreeLDN]

‘Pragmatism cannot negotiate with physics. More fossil fuels, when burned, mean more CO₂, higher global temperatures, greater climate impacts and increased risks of crossing dangerous tipping points. Political compromise cannot change that.’

[Andrew Harmsworth FRAS ☀️ @harmsy]

The ability to hit multiple nails squarely on the head is a useful skill, but I fear many in government prefer bent nails. Physics has its own rules and they're non-negotiable and laugh in the face of claimed "pragmatism".
@DanielZeichner @IanSollom @Ed_Miliband @andyburnham ⚠️

[Jorge Riechmann @JorgeRiechmann]

"El Gobierno [británico] ha presentado su decisión como pragmática. Pero el pragmatismo es un marco político, no una característica intrínseca del sistema climático. Un mayor consumo de combustibles fósiles, al quemarse, implica más CO₂ en la atmósfera, temperaturas globales +

[Kevin Anderson @KevinClimate]

@Olivergill4B The grid currently represents around 18% of the UK's final energy demand, the other 80+% remains dominated by fossil fuels.

[Paul Scholes @misterp55]

You’ve heard the views of ministers, other politicians, the global heating industry and compliant media, now hear the view of science.

[Kevin Anderson @KevinClimate]

@Si66T @implausibleblog Which country is going to cut back its production ... ?

We're just adding more to the supply, hence more emissions, more warming, more impacts and more harm.

[Kevin Anderson @KevinClimate]

@AtholBrose @implausibleblog Do you have any sense which country will cut back on production to compensate for the additional emissions from the UK? Certainly more jobs - in emergency workers putting out wild fires, and health workers dealing with the impacts of the particulates from them.

[Fiona Harvey @fionaharvey]

Let’s not forget that we all bear some responsibility - the burning is made worse by climate crisis but palm oil interests appear to be starting some fires and encouraging continuation, to use the burned land for plantations. Stop using palm oil!

[Leo Park @park_loveseco]

@ais4azs9jp4lada @KevinClimate Exactly this .. I love cities built around people not cars, so much better to live in ❤️

[Kevin Anderson @KevinClimate]

I take a slightly different view: start with better urban planning, then walking, cycling, e-bikes, public transport (from buses & trams to trains & coaches) - and then appropriately sized BEVs for the rural areas & rental BEVs in the towns and cities.
