Romance fraud happens when someone you meet online, for example on dating apps, social media, or messaging platforms who pretend to have a romantic interest in you to earn your trust. Once they have it then they start to ask for money, crypto, or other gifts. They often use excuses like “I’m working abroad” or " there is an emergency" to avoid meeting in person.

According to the RCMP Canadians have lost tens of millions to these scams, often much more than reported because victims feel embarrassed to come forward.

• They always have an excuse for why they cannot meet in person or video chat
• They ask you to send them money or crypto
• Someone you’ve never met professes their love very quickly
• Their life seems "unbelievable" or over the top
• They have little to no online presence
• They discourage you from talking to friends or family

True love should not cost you your life savings.

If you think you have been targeted stop communication, contact your bank, and report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre and your local police.
