بالأمس، شاركتُ في نقاش نظمته هيئة الأمم المتحدة للمرأة لاستكشاف دور النساء في صياغة الاستجابات المتعلقة بالأشخاص المفقودين والمخفيين قسراً، مع التركيز بشكل خاص على #سوريا و #لبنان.

تظل #النساء أكثر الفاعلات تصميماً في البحث عن المفقودين. فهن اللواتي مهدن الطريق بالبحث عن أحبائهن وشكلن الاستجابة الوطنية والدولية. وإلى جانب تخصيص يوم دولي لهن، من الضروري أن يُترجم هذا التقدير إلى إجراءا�� حقيقية وذلك من خلال إشراك حقيقي وجوهري ومشاركة مستمرة ودعم ملموس. وقد تشرفت بمشاركة الندوة أيضاً مع زميلتيّ في البحث وداد حلواني ونور برهان.

تلتزم المؤسسة المستقلة بالعمل جنبًا إلى جنب مع النساء، لضمان أن يكنّ في صميم العمليات وقدرتهن على المشاركة بالأنشطة في جميع المراحل. وفي هذا الجهد الجماعي، تقع على عاتقنا المسؤولية والالتزام بالبقاء إلى جانبهن في سعيهن للحصول على إجابات لمطالبهن المشروعة.

Yesterday, I joined a discussion organized by
@unwomenlebanon to explore women’s role in shaping responses to missing and forcibly disappeared persons with a special focus in #Syria and #Lebanon.

#Women remain the most determined actors in the search for the missing. They are the ones who have paved the way looking for their beloved and shaped the national & international response. Beyond dedicating an international day to them, it is essential that this recognition translates into real action: genuine and substantive inclusion, sustained engagement and meaningful support. I was honored to share the panel also with fellow searchers Wadad Halawani and Nour Burhan.

The @IIMPSyria is committed to working hand‑in‑hand with women, ensuring that they are at the center of the processes and able to participate actively at every stage. In this collective effort, it is our responsibility and commitment to remain by their side as they seek answers to their legitimate demands.

وشارك في اللقاء رئيسة المؤسسة المستقلة كارلا كينتانا، حيث اُتيحت مساحة للعائلات والمشاركين من سوريا وخارجها لتبادل التجارب ومناقشة دور الذاكرة والبحث عن الحقيقة في قضية المفقودين وما يتجاوزها

فالذاكرة والبحث عن الحقيقة لا يقتصران على مساعدة العائلات في الوصول إلى إجابات فحسب بل يسهمان أيضاً في منع تكرار مثل هذه الانتهاكات وإعادة بناء الثقة وتعزيز التماسك المجتمعي. وتشكل مساحات إحياء الذكرى جزءاً من هذه الجهود، بما تتيحه من تكريم للمفقودين وتأكيد على حق عائلاتهم في معرفة الحقيقة ومواصلة البحث

In commemoration of the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, the Independent Institution on Missing Persons in Syria (IIMP) brought together families, survivors, civil society organizations, practitioners and experts in Berlin to reflect on #TruthSeeking, #Memorialization and collective #Healing for families of the missing

The event, attended by Head of the Independent Institution @kiquinta , provided a space for families and participants from Syria and beyond to share experiences and reflect on the role of memory and truth-seeking in the search for missing persons and beyond

Memory and truth-seeking can help families find answers, contribute to preventing such violations from happening again, rebuild trust and help reconstruct the social fabric. Spaces of remembrance can be an important part of this process, honoring those who are missing and affirming families’ right to know the truth and continue the search

Women have always been at the forefront of the search for the missing around the world. They have walked tirelessly, knocked on doors, unearthed the truth, advocated for legislation, and helped establish institutions. The General Assembly resolution—spearheaded by Syria—is a fitting recognition of their tireless efforts and their unwavering demand for truth and justice.

It is our responsibility,  as members of the international community and also as Member States, to continue working alongside them to provide answers to their legitimate demands.

We commend Syria for spearheading this important and well-deserved recognition.

On International day against disappearances, it is essential to give recognition to the families of the missing that experience the disappearance on a daily basis and that search incessantly. It is also a reminder that disappearance affects all of humanity.

في اليوم الدولي لضحايا الاختفاء القسري، تتجلى أهمية تكريم عائلات المفقودين الذين يعانون يوميًا من الاختفاء القسري لذويهم ويواصلون البحث عنهم بلا كلل. كما أن هذا اليوم يُعد تذكيرًا بأن الاختفاء القسري يؤثر على البشرية جمعاء.

I bid farewell to Amb. @olivierjmaes as he concludes his tenure as Permanent Representative of @LuxembourgUN in New York.

On behalf of the Independent Institution on Missing Persons in Syria (IIMP), I would like to express my deep gratitude. As penholder of the resolution that created the @IIMPSyria, 🇱🇺#Luxembourg played a decisive role in turning the hopes of Syrian families into a concrete institution dedicated to truth, with a victim-centered approach.

We thank Amb. Maes for his dedication, support and partnership, and we extend our warmest wishes on his new responsibilities.

On #WorldHumanitarianDay, we remember all the humanitarian workers who lost their lives while helping others — including the 136 United Nations personnel who died in the line of duty last year. It is inexcusable that those who dedicate themselves to alleviating suffering are still exposed to such danger. Humanitarian and UN personnel must never be targeted; attacks against them violate international law, including international humanitarian law.

The humanitarian, independent and impartial mandate of the @IIMPSyria demands access and insists on its family centered approach, the sharing of information and a collective effort. As Sérgio Vieira de Mello said: “Humanitarian workers must have access to those who are suffering and must be protected.”

What @BarhamSalih said during his visit to #Syria last week has stayed with me: "the international community must match the determination of Syrians to rebuild" — and, I would add, to heal. I was reminded of our own meeting at the end of July, when we discussed the evolving situation in Syria, the immense challenges faced by families and possible ways of cooperation with @Refugees.

For me, his visit is a reminder of why the @IIMPSyria exists. Our mandate is humanitarian at its core — to help families of the missing find answers about the fate and whereabouts of their loved ones, and to ease even a fraction of the pain they have carried for so many years. Nothing more, nothing less.

Our humanitarian work is impartial. This means we search for every missing person, regardless of who they are, where they come from, or who brings their story to us. Every family deserves clarity. Every person deserves to be found.

The path to recovery is long, but it begins with providing answers and restoring trust.
