What if the future of farming isn’t just about producing more… but restoring the soil while producing more?

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to visit the Power for Food Partnership (P4FP) stand at the Rwanda Agricultural Show 2026 in Mulindi. What I found was more than an exhibition..; it was a showcase of practical innovations that are helping farmers transition toward regenerative and climate-resilient agriculture.

One of the highlights was learning about innovative soil improvement products, including biochar in both powdered and granulated forms, alongside organic soil enhancers. These solutions are designed to improve soil structure, increase water-holding capacity, support beneficial soil microorganisms, and enhance nutrient retention. Healthy soils are the foundation of productive and resilient farming systems.

As climate change continues to challenge agriculture, restoring soil health is no longer optional…it is essential. Technologies and nature-based solutions like these demonstrate that farmers can improve productivity while protecting the environment for future generations.

The experience reminded me that the future of agriculture will be driven by partnerships that combine science, innovation, renewable energy, and sustainable farming practices to build stronger food systems.

The Power for Food Partnership (P4FP) is implemented by SNV Rwanda in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources (MINAGRI) and funded by the IKEA Foundation. The programme works with partners including Rwanda Climate Change and Development Network (RCCDN), Eastern Africa Farmers Federation (EAFF/Kilimo), Peace and Development Network (PDN), Energy Private Developers (EPD Rwanda), and the Highlands Centre of Leadership for Development (HLC-L4D) to accelerate the adoption of renewable energy and regenerative agricultural practices across Rwanda.

In eastern Uganda, maize is more than a staple crop—it's a source of food security, household income, and economic opportunity for thousands of smallholder farmers. But limited access to knowledge, quality inputs, and market opportunities continues to hold many farmers back.

Recently, Kilimo Trust brought together farmers and key stakeholders in Mbale for a regional field day to strengthen farmer knowledge, showcase improved maize production practices, and foster stronger linkages to agricultural services and markets.

Through practical demonstrations, farmers learned about improved maize production, integrated pest and weed management, fertilizer application, and other recommended agronomic practices that can help increase productivity and resilience.

The field day also gave farmers an opportunity to share experiences, ask questions, engage with agricultural experts and implementing partners, and connect with Village-Based Agents and agro-dealers—turning knowledge into action and strengthening the networks that support farming communities.

Through the Maize Technologies Promotion Project (MaTPP III), implemented, we continue empowering smallholder farmers with the knowledge, skills, and partnerships they need to improve productivity, strengthen their livelihoods, and build more resilient farming systems.

After every harvest, many rice farmers are left with tonnes of by-products such as rice straw. For many, it's burned or discarded.

But what if that same residue could become an additional source of income?

That's exactly what Japheth Odhiambo has done. By turning rice straw into vermicompost, he's restoring soil health, reducing agricultural waste, and building a profitable business through the sale of organic fertilizer and earthworms.
