Chuck Bednarik | B-24 Waist Gunner, USAAF, 1943-1945
Enlisted at 18 and flew 30 combat missions over Germany as a waist gunner with the 8th Air Force. On one run, his crew hauled fuel behind enemy lines to Patton's tanks. Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters. After the war, he went to Penn State, went first overall in the 1949 draft, and became the last 60-minute man in the NFL.

Gen. Daniel "Chappie" James Jr. | Fighter Pilot, USAAF/USAF, 1943-1978
Trained with the Tuskegee Airmen. 101 combat missions in Korea, 78 more in Vietnam flying F-4s with the 8th TFW "Wolfpack." In 1975, he became the first black four-star general in any U.S. service.
