*My Encounter with Cobhams Asuquo: what would you do if you had blind child?
In 2012,I had the privilege of interviewing, Cobhams Asuquo after his speaking session at Excellence in Leadership Conference (ELC). It was a revealing encounter that lasted for 30mins
After exhausting all questions I had planned to ask I threw a casual jab at him:"as someone who was born with sight before coming blind, do you often wish you could see again for at least a day or two?Have you ever gotten to a point where you prayed to God to restore your sight?
"That's a tough one" he said after a deep sigh follow by a broad smile that concealed so much. "You won't believe it Kingsley, but I don't think I need my eyes for anything now," he said.He went on to share with me a "funny experience" he had at a church service he attended.
Being a celebrity the pastor decided to recognise his presence and to appreciate him for coming to their service. Next thing he asked the congregation to join him as he prays for Cobhams. In the course of the prayer, the pastor started praying for restoration of sight for him.
"I smiled how I wish this man knew how much of a strength this so called lack of sight is for me, he won't be praying like this" he said. "Truth is, I don't live my life, like someone that's in need of healing because sight would be a distraction for me now.", he said.
That's life for you!
What one man considers as strength, another sees as weakness. While some have sights and are living mediocre lives, there are some without sights, and are living extraordinary lives and even impacting those with sights.
If we can ask God to show us where our strengths lie, we'll realise such strengths has always been resident in us and finds expression not in the things we struggle to do but in what we do effortlessly, with or without sight.
*That is the case with every child*. If you can take your eyes off the things your child struggles to do, you'll be able to see immense strength in them and in what they do effortlessly.
Every child is born a genius. This is one correction I always make whenever I engage anyone that lacks understanding of the immense intelligence that children are born with. That is why it is wrong to have a special class for a certain group of kids, classified as "A Class".
Depending on the intelligence of the adults in their lives, the genius in most children are either given wings or clipped with every interaction with an adult.
Many of today's adults were victims of such retardants while they were kids. They've become wounded talent, stunted geniuses seeking for means to give expression to the immense capacity they were born with. That's why school can either become a graveyard or catalyst of talent
Hence the job of a teacher is *to define and establish the concept*", create the atmosphere for learning to happen" and most importantly do everything " *to make the connection* ".
So, whenever you talk about a "stimulating environment" for a child, you are indirectly describing the minds of the people influencing/shaping the mind of that child. In the same way, a child can be surrounded by adults who are mentally and intellectually retardants.
He once ruled the world of boxing. But his lust for women, an ingrained street life, a fatherless childhood & an adulthood bereft of accountability were opponents he couldn't knock out. What can today's young man learn from the Life, Rise & fall of Mike Tyson? 9pm on City 105.1FM
