Bridget Bishop

On this date in 1692, a 60-year-old midwife named Bridget Bishop was executed by hanging.

Bishop was the first victim of the Salem Witch Trials, in Salem, Massachusetts, having been convicted because of her independent lifestyle, sharp personality, and non-conformist dress.

Bishop was also targeted by young female witnesses who claimed her "invisible spirit" was tormenting them, as well as physical "evidence" such as rag dolls that were given sinister implications.

More than 200 people in the Salem area were accused of practicing witchcraft—the devil’s magic—and 20 were executed.
