The Louisiana Federation of Teachers is an American Federation of Teachers and AFL-CIO affiliate representing over 20,000 LA teachers and paraprofessionals.
This is a welcome step in the right direction, but much more needs to be done.

LFT warns that doing away with the stipend could make it harder to attract and retain teachers...“For our teachers who have been there in the classrooms with our students & who should be credited with gains, we’re sending the wrong message.” https://t.co/yooLiXIrYz
Thanks to the efforts of LFT, our members who took action, and legislators who prioritized education, we were able to pass several bills that protect your rights and voice. https://t.co/NZQtKNQFIN #laed#lalege#lagov
If a Convention convenes, anything and everything is open for debate–funding for public education, the homestead exemption, retirement for teachers and public employees. Act now to protect public education. https://t.co/HWO9ERHswf #LaLege#laed#lagov
. @BESE_LA would need to approve any contract the education department enters into "for the administration and management of the program or parts of the program," under the amendment. SB313 is expected to head next to House Appropriations for review. #lalege#laed
A bill to provide paid parental leave to Louisiana’s K-12 school employees has been pulled by its sponsor because he said some still have questions and concerns about its cost. @allisonallsop reports: https://t.co/1swNLb3CMX #lalege#laed
Louisiana Senate passes bill to use tax $ to send students to private school.
- @LAGovJeffLandry: "It will put us on the first step to be able to transform education in this state."
- @RoyceDuplessis: "This is an abandonment of public education." https://t.co/rgPxudBkvb #lalege
NEW: @LAGovJeffLandry today said lawmakers could revise the Louisiana constitution to unlock money for private school scholarships (ESAs). He didn't give specifics, but one option is to remove language that protects public school funding. https://t.co/ADEblAsIfH #lalege
👏HB 322, which protects a teacher’s right to teach free from distraction, unanimously passed out of Senate today. It will now move to the Governor’s desk for signature—the final step required for it to become law. #LaLege#LaEd

“We talk about a teacher shortage, we talk about employee shortages, bus driver shortages, we should be talking about how we can permanently sustain compensation for teachers and school employees across the state.” https://t.co/5hfRaTT9ge
The House is not spending $191m more on teachers and support staff in this budget. They are spending less money on teachers/staff in that plan.
This year: $198m for stipends, $25m in differential pay
House budget: $166m for stipends, $25m in differential pay #lalege
Yes. The House added $25m in "differential" pay permanently into the school funding formula, but that $25m was present in this year's budget on a temporary basis. It's not an increase in teacher pay from this year. #lalege
Even though it's enough money for all teachers to get $1700 stipends, the money doesn't have to be given across the board. Some teachers could get bigger stipends. Some could get less. #lalege
This year, teachers got $2000 stipends. The proposed budget only includes $1700 for stipends. The fact is, teachers will bring home less compensation next year than they will this year. Stipends are not bonuses and they are not the permanent raise that was promised. #lalege#laed
Just saw this on a lawmaker's Instagram and let me add some context.
*It's not a bonus. It's a stipend.
This year, teachers got $2000 stipends. The House budget includes enough money for $1700 stipends - which is a cut from last year. 1/ #lalege
There is NO pay raise in the MFP and it will be up to local districts as to whether or not teachers receive a stipend. The only way to ensure that teachers are paid fairly is for the Senate to send the MFP back to BESE to add a permanent pay raise #lalege https://t.co/nHtQF7tm60
Our school districts are being run on unpaid overtime. SB 205 provides additional compensation for teachers for planning and working overtime to help kids thrive. Tell lawmakers to pass it NOW: https://t.co/eslgff3qGg #lalege#laed
