The conference, themed “The Value Shift: Strategies for the New Market Reality in the Age of the Empowered Consumer,” provided a platform for discussions on evolving market dynamics, consumer expectations and the changing roles of businesses and regulatory institutions.
According to the organisers, the award recognises Dr. Ajayi's exemplary leadership, institutional reforms and digital innovations, which have contributed to advancing his reform agenda at the Agency. It also acknowledges his efforts in strengthening environmental regulation and promoting environmental safety across Lagos State.
Dr. Ajayi was represented at the event by the Director of Partnership, Grants Management and Innovation, LASEPA, Mrs. Olabisi Shonibare, who also participated in a panel session examining the changing expectations of consumers, businesses and regulatory institutions.
Speaking about LASEPA's regulatory responsibilities, Mrs. Shonibare explained that the Agency oversees activities affecting the air, water and land environments of Lagos State, with industrial operations constituting a significant component of its regulatory mandate.
She further noted that LASEPA is increasingly encouraging businesses to integrate Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles into their operations, ensuring that sustainability is reflected not only in their business practices but also in the products and services they provide.
Dr. Ajayi's recognition comes at a time when LASEPA continues to intensify efforts towards strengthening environmental compliance, promoting responsible business practices and deepening stakeholder engagement across Lagos State.
Under his leadership, the Agency has placed emphasis on aligning environmental regulation with practical service delivery, sustainable business operations and the protection of environmental quality.

At LASEPA, we believe conversations about ozone protection should reach the people who will work with cooling technologies tomorrow.
As part of our 2026 World Ozone Day activities, we took the conversation to Lagos State Technical College, Obafemi Awolowo, Ikorodu, where students learned about ozone layer protection, sustainable cooling and safe HVAC/R practices.
The students got to see sustainable cooling in practice, including a solar-powered freezer and battery storage system. They also participated in a hands-on battery assembly exercise, giving them a closer look at the technology behind energy-efficient cooling.
The winning team earned a one-month internship and ₦20,000, while the second and third teams received ₦10,000 and ₦5,000 respectively.
By bringing these lessons into the technical classroom, LASEPA is helping students connect what they learn with the kind of cooling practices that can protect our environment.

The General Manager, Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, @thetundeajayi alongside the top management staff of the Agency, has received members of the African Cities Research Consortium (ACRC), under the Centre for Housing and Sustainable Development, University of Lagos, on a courtesy visit to the Agency.
The engagement focused on exploring collaboration around a community-based waste management model being piloted in Ajegunle-Ikorodu, Kosofe LGA, which gives residents a more active role in sorting, recovering and finding value in waste.
Responding to the presentation, Dr. Ajayi described the initiative as a step in the right direction and a proof of concept, noting that lasting change cannot come from government directives alone. Communities must have the capacity, ownership and incentive to participate in environmental solutions.
He noted that while Lagos has sustained advocacy and enforcement on waste separation, approaches that connect environmental responsibility with tangible community benefits can help drive stronger behavioural change.
Dr. Ajayi further stressed that scaling the model would require collaboration across the environmental ecosystem, including LAWMA, relevant ministries, Local Governments, CDAs, recyclers and informal waste workers, particularly in communities where conventional waste collection is challenging.
He assured the ACRC team of LASEPA’s technical support in ensuring that activities such as waste recovery and composting are carried out safely and in line with environmental standards.
For LASEPA, the conversation is about moving beyond simply evacuating waste to reducing waste at source, recovering resources, supporting recycling and creating value within Lagos communities.

LASEPA joins UNIDO to bring Project SAP 210184 to a close at a colourful ceremony.
The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) participated in the closing ceremony of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) @UNIDO Project SAP 210184, titled “Promoting Sustainable Plastic Value Chains through Circular Economy Practices.”
The ceremony, held at L’EOLA Hotel, Magambo Close, Maryland Estate, Ikeja, Lagos, brought together key stakeholders from the Federal and State Governments, development partners, private-sector organisations and other institutions working to advance sustainable plastic waste management in Nigeria.
Funded by the Government of Japan and implemented by UNIDO in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Environment (FMEnv) and other key stakeholders including LASEPA, the project commenced in April 2022 and, following an 18-month extension, bringing the implementation period to 54 months, which ended in September 2026.
The project aims to promote inclusive and sustainable industrial development in Nigeria by reducing plastic waste in the environment, promoting circular economy practices, improving plastic waste management, and strengthening the plastic value chain.
Representing the General Manager of LASEPA, Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, the Director, Environmental Sustainability Unit, Mrs. Adebayo Adedayo, emphasised the critical role of collaboration in achieving the objectives and sustaining the outcomes of the project.
She noted that collaboration among relevant government institutions, development partners, private-sector organisations and communities had been instrumental to the progress recorded under the initiative, stressing that no single institution can effectively address the complex challenges of plastic waste management in isolation.
Mrs. Adedayo further highlighted the importance of grassroots participation and community ownership in environmental projects. According to her, communities should be actively engaged from the planning and implementation stages to promote ownership, ensure effective adoption and sustain project outcomes beyond the project period.
The ceremony featured presentations on the achievements of the project and summary evaluation results, alongside discussions on “Public-Private Partnerships Driving Successful Plastic Circular Economy Initiatives,” with case studies from Abuja and Lagos.
The project was implemented in close collaboration with a broad range of national and sub-national partners, including the Federal Ministry of Environment (FMEnv), National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB), Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Food and Beverage Recycling Alliance (FBRA), Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), Waste Management Society of Nigeria (WAMASON), and various private-sector stakeholders.
Also in attendance were the Honourable Minister of Environment, Malam Balarabe Abbas Lawal, represented by Ms. Omotunde Adeola, Director, Pollution Control and Environmental Health Department, Federal Ministry of Environment; Ambassador Hideo Suzuki, Ambassador of Japan to Nigeria; Ambassador Philbert Abaka Johnson, UNIDO Nigeria Regional Hub Representative; Ms. Nahomi Nishio, UNIDO Project Manager; and Ms. Arese Onaghise.
Speaking on the enforcement operation, the General Manager of LASEPA, Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, reaffirmed the Agency’s unwavering commitment to protecting public health and preserving the environment through sustained monitoring, regulatory compliance, and effective enforcement of environmental standards across Lagos State.
Dr. Ajayi stressed that environmental compliance is a collective responsibility, noting that LASEPA would continue to intensify enforcement actions against individuals, businesses, religious organisations, and corporate bodies whose activities constitute risks to the environment, public health, and the wellbeing of Lagos residents.
He urged business owners, facility operators, religious institutions, scrap dealers, and residents across the State to embrace environmentally responsible practices, obtain all necessary permits and approvals, comply fully with applicable environmental regulations, and cooperate with LASEPA in its efforts to build a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable Lagos.
