Episode 8 of the ongoing Halemaʻumaʻu eruption at the summit of Kīlauea began last night, February 3, 2025, at 9:52 p.m. HST. Fountaining continues as of this morning. Livestream views available here: https://t.co/jAcOUDIHjq
How does the viscosity of real lava vary spatially and with temperature across an active flow field? @UBGeology PhD student Martin Harris built the gear to find out and applied it to Icelandic lava:
Real-time, in situ viscosity mapping of active lava https://t.co/4qqyY9M3pr
New experimental paper from our lab! We quantitatively show that most dome lavas are emplaced via a mixed viscous-brittle flow mechanism! Potentially transformative implications for our understanding of volcanic eruptions!

UB PhD student Martin Harris has built a new portable penetrometer for measuring the viscosity of active lava and used it to measure lavas at Litli-Hrutur in Iceland. Check it out!

New eruption on Reykjanes, Iceland started around 2 pm local time. The fissure is in the same place as the previous eruption, a few km north of Grindavik. Currently ~2.5 km long and may be still lengthening
Registration for your 2024 edition of the "MELTS, GLASSES, MAGMAS" short course, taking place in Munich, Germany, from 22 through 26 July 2024 is now open:

#Etna's Southeast Crater continues emitting countless graceful vapor rings ("volcanic vortex rings"), a phenomenon never seen like this before. Someone said "maybe because we receive so much bad news lately, Etna has decided to do something simply beautiful". 5 April 2024
#Etna is putting on a new, different show. Since the evening of 2 April 2024, a small vent on the Southeast Crater is emetting unprecedented quantities of gas rings (volcanic vortex rings). Timelapse (10x) video recorded at dawn on 4 April 2024 from home in Tremestieri Etneo
🌋Geochemistry report of the new lava🌋 The report focuses on SO2 emissions during the Sundhnúkur eruptions in comparison with the fagradalsfjall events

New work led by our Luiz @PereiraConca out now in Journal of #Volcanology and Geothermal Research, showing how nanolite crystallisation increases #magma viscosity due to silica enrichment in residual melt.

The La Cumbre #volcano on Ferandina Island in the Galapagos has been continually erupting since early Sunday. Imagery from @NOAA's #GOESEast 🛰️ shows the hotspot and smoke plume emanating from the archipelago.
Lava has engulfed hot water pipeline that supplies 30,000 people across Reykjanes peninsula. Homes are heated with this water so this is a serious incident and work is underway on mitigating it. Map published on @RUVfrettir
