🚨 ONGOING: Environmental Compliance Enforcement at the Tejuosho–Ojuelegba Corridor

Today, our @Lawma_gov Waste Investigation, Surveillance and Enforcement (WISE) team, working alongside @LAGESCOfficial (KAI) officials, OP MESA military personnel and the Nigeria Police, is carrying out another round of enforcement operations along the Tejuosho–Ojuelegba corridor, with shops being sealed over the indiscriminate disposal of waste on the road median.

📍The operation currently covers Modele Street, Fagbile Street and Maja Street, where persistent environmental sanitation violations continue despite sustained advocacy, repeated warnings and previous engagements. These enforcement actions are necessary to restore environmental order, protect public infrastructure and ensure compliance with Lagos State environmental laws.

🔒 The affected shops will remain sealed until the required sanitation standards are met and full compliance with environmental regulations is achieved.

Our objective remains compliance, not punishment. We urge all businesses and residents to patronise their assigned PSP operators, keep their surroundings clean and dispose of waste responsibly.

On TVC News Breakfast, LAWMA MD/CEO, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, outlined the agency’s vision for a cleaner and more sustainable Lagos—from expanding waste collection with 150 new trucks and investing in modern waste infrastructure, to converting organic waste into clean energy and scaling up recycling initiatives through the Waste-to-Wealth programme.

He also reaffirmed LAWMA’s commitment to enforcing environmental laws while calling on every resident to play their part by disposing of waste responsibly and reporting illegal dumping.

The Lagos State Government, through LAWMA, has commissioned the rehabilitated Road E and newly constructed disposal platforms at the Olusosun Disposal Facility, Ojota, marking another milestone in strengthening waste management infrastructure across the state.

The upgraded infrastructure will improve access for compactor trucks, reduce turnaround time, and enhance waste evacuation operations, reinforcing the state’s commitment to a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable Lagos.

Waste Surveillance and Enforcement Update

As part of its sustained enforcement drive, LAWMA has arrested several environmental offenders for various infractions in different parts of the state.

The arrests, made through the combined efforts of LAWMA’s Waste Investigation, Surveillance and Enforcement (WISE) team, and other enforcement arms of Lagos State, led to the apprehension of Wasiu Sulaimon, Segun Abayomi, Pelumi Noah, Soliu Hamed, Abdu Muhammed, Kabir Muhammed, Monday Ogbu, Farouk Adamu, Muutar Yakubu and Lekan Abejo for illegal dumping of refuse while Destiny Bassey, Oluwakemi Sobowale, Stanley Otu and Ridwan Adisa were arrested for street trading and obstruction.

All the suspects and others arrested for miscreancy, including Josiah Umar, Jubril Salisu, Benjamin Dare, Isik Jalfa, and Mathew Alabi have been taken to the Lagos State Task Force Office, Oshodi, where they will be charged to court in accordance with the environmental laws of Lagos State.

LAWMA remains committed to enforcing environmental regulations and ensuring that individuals who violate sanitation laws are held accountable. Residents are urged to support government sanitation efforts and dispose of waste responsibly, as well as desist from street trading and other activities that obstruct public spaces.

LAWMA, HEFAMAA Strengthen Partnership on Healthcare Waste Management

The Managing Director, Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin today hosted the Executive Secretary of the Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) Dr. Victoria Egunjobi and her team, and explored collaborative strategies for improving healthcare waste management across Lagos State.

Discussions focused on strengthening inter-agency cooperation to ensure the safe collection, bagging, weighing, transportation, and disposal of healthcare waste, in line with environmental and public health standards.

Both agencies also explored opportunities for enhanced regulatory compliance, joint monitoring, stakeholder engagement, and sustained public awareness to promote responsible healthcare waste management.

The meeting reaffirmed the shared commitment of LAWMA and HEFAMAA to protecting public health, safeguarding the environment, and fostering a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable Lagos through stronger institutional collaboration.
