SC football coaches, good afternoon! Sent this out on SportsYou, but I know some don’t use it.
With the recent realignment in our state and the ongoing appeal process several important questions have come to the surface. After talking with coaches across South Carolina, I worked with Coach Josh Wiedemann @coach_josh_w (Hilton Head) and Coach Ben Beck @Coach_Beck_ (Westside) over the past few weeks to narrow those questions and compile data we believe will be useful to all programs.
I’ve attached a spreadsheet covering the past five seasons (2021–2025) of SCHSL football. It includes:
-Overall winning percentage (five-year combined)
-Winning percentage by classification (by year)
-Year-by-year team performance (2021–2025)
-Performance of programs that changed classifications during the last five seasons
-A look at results in the post-COVID period
The purpose intended to help us discuss a few key questions:
-What trends do we see in performance post-COVID?
-Enrollment drives classification, but does it consistently correlate with winning?
-Does moving classifications (up or down) impact team performance?
-What factors may contribute to teams overperforming or underperforming (coaching changes, roster depth, community expectations, rule changes, region strength/competitive balance, etc.)?
Our goal is for coaches to have objective information they can take back to their administration and district whether the focus is building, sustaining, or improving a program. Winning starts with players, administration, culture, and coaching, and the classification process should aim to create competitive balance statewide. This is not meant to penalize successful programs or criticize programs that are struggling. It’s simply an attempt to present the broader picture pros, cons, and trends using five years of results.
I hope this helps. If you have questions about the data or how anything was calculated, please reach out and we’ll be glad to help.
