Trump’s reaction to the #LosAngelesFire - similar to the right’s conspiracy theories about the North Carolina floods - shows that virtually anything can be politicized in this country now. What kind of crisis or challenge or even victory can be unifying today? Are moments like 9/11 or the moon landing, which bring Americans together regardless of party, more and more behind us?

For one recent example, I remember relative national unity condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine but that of course has disappeared as well.
