Pienaar on Mofokeng: He can be the best, butโฆ
Bafana Bafana legend Steven Pienaar believes that Orlando Pirates star Relebohile Mofokeng can reach the highest level of the game. He says the young star has everything required to become one of the best players South Africa has ever produced.
Pienaar is currently in Mexico as part of the group of 2010 Bafana Bafana legends. He says the country must be careful in how it manages the 21-year-old player so as not to put him under unnecessary pressure.
Relebohile Mofokeng will be one of the players South Africa pins its hopes on during the World Cup. This follows an amazing season he had with Pirates, where he helped the team win the Betway Premiership title for the first time in 14 years.
The Sharpeville-born player has become a fan favourite in just a few years since entering the top flight.
However, Steven Pienaar โ who played for major European clubs such as Ajax Amsterdam, Everton, Borussia Dortmund, and Tottenham Hotspur โ has sounded a warning.
"Rele has all the qualities to be one of the best players in South Africa. He is a special player and we must protect him," said Pienaar.
"We shouldn't put him under pressure by crowning him prematurely. We must give him the chance to play his football. He has talent, he is fearless, and this is his time to show the world what he is made of."
Steven Pienaar stated that the World Cup will provide Relebohile Mofokeng with a massive stage to showcase his talent.
He added, however, that Mofokeng's success will depend on whether people support him without stifling him by giving him a burden beyond his capabilities.
"Let him be allowed to play. His time has arrived," Pienaar concluded.
