Earlier today, Mr. John Ehidreme, 56, was arrested for dumping refuse into a drainage channel at No. 18 Oluoga, Ikorodu. The Lagos State Government emphasizes that illegal waste disposal violates environmental laws, blocks drainage, causes flooding, and risks public health. Residents are urged to dispose of waste properly.

A Waste bin is the foundational tool for proper waste disposal practice. It is a simple yet powerful instrument that ensures hygiene, facilitates recycling, and contributes to the overall health of the community.
For a metropolis like Lagos, which is grappling with the challenges of rapid urbanization, mandating and enforcing the use of waste bins is not just an administrative requirement, it is an essential public health and environmental strategy that forms the bedrock of a clean, healthy, and sustainable future for all its residents.
The Complexity of Sustainable Solutions
A simple example of waste prevention is using reusable products instead of disposable ones. We all discuss the impacts of deforestation on climate change. Still, we continue to cut down trees to produce books that are not reusable for academic purposes in elementary school systems.
Globally, the textbook production process itself emits more than 40 million metric tons of CO2. When it comes to pulp and paper, book publishing is the third-largest industrial emitter of greenhouse gases.
Some time ago, a single textbook could be reused by different elementary school children for academic purposes; one could easily pass on an old textbook to family or friends for reuse. Our publisher must return to the eco-friendly production model.
Currently, for every academic term, thousands of new textbooks are printed, bought, and used. On the other hand, almost the same number of textbooks and materials are discarded after use because they can't be reused for further academic purposes, due to changes in editions.
The reuse of textbooks will not only help conserve the environment but also support the education of children from less privileged backgrounds.
We must promote a sustainable educational system that allows students to return textbooks after the academic year ends and ensures they are reused for incoming students. The reuse of textbooks will conserve resources and finances.

We have begun clearing the illegal shanties and market stalls built along the median of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.
As we rebuild the Lagos-Badagry Expressway into a modern 10-lane highway, we cannot allow its median to become a market, a settlement or a site for illegal structures.
There is absolutely no reason for anyone to trade, build makeshift shops or live on the median of a major highway. It is unsafe, illegal and unacceptable.
We often compare Lagos with some of the world’s leading cities and ask why we cannot be like them. The truth is that those cities work because people respect public infrastructure and obey the rules. We cannot expect a world-class city while refusing to show the discipline needed to keep one. Dumping waste indiscriminately or building illegal structures along our highways will not move us forward.
If we want a cleaner, safer and more organised Lagos, discipline and personal responsibility must become part of our everyday culture. That is how we build a city we can all be proud of.

Yesterday, I joined The Conversation on @lagostelevision to discuss “LAWMA and the Clamour for a Cleaner Lagos.”
I emphasised that a cleaner Lagos requires collective action. Government, residents and the business community must work together to move from a linear waste system to a circular economy that recovers value from waste, creates jobs and enables more sustainable waste management.

Waste Management Is a National Responsibility: Why the Federal Government Must Support States with Dedicated Funding
Nigeria's Waste Challenge Can No Longer Be Ignored
Nigeria is facing a growing waste management crisis that demands urgent national attention. Every day, thousands of tonnes of municipal, commercial, industrial, and household waste are generated across the country. While many state governments are making significant efforts to keep their cities and communities clean, the increasing volume of waste is stretching available resources beyond their limits.
Waste management is no longer just an environmental issue—it is a public health, economic, and national development concern. If Nigeria is serious about building resilient cities, protecting public health, and achieving sustainable economic growth, the Federal Government must provide dedicated financial support to states to strengthen waste management systems.

LAWMA: Lagos Generating Up to 16,000 Tonnes of Waste Daily, Rolls Out Circular Economy Reforms
The Lagos Waste Management Authority (@Lawma_gov ) has disclosed that Lagos generates between 13,000 and 16,000 tonnes of waste every day, as it unveiled ongoing reforms aimed at transforming the state's waste management system through recycling, waste-to-wealth initiatives, and modern disposal infrastructure.
Speaking on The Conversation, a programme on Lagos Television, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin @muyiwag said managing waste in a city with an estimated population of over 22 million remains one of the state's greatest environmental challenges.
According to him, Lagos requires at least 1,000 compactor trucks to efficiently evacuate waste daily but currently operates only about 450 to 500 functional trucks, owing to rising operational costs and inadequate payment for waste collection services by some residents.
He explained that the state government is moving away from the traditional linear model of collecting and dumping mixed waste towards a circular economy that prioritises waste separation, recycling, resource recovery, and renewable energy generation.
"As long as we continue to mix all our waste together and simply transport it to landfill sites, the challenge will persist. Most of what we throw away can be recovered, recycled or converted into wealth," he said.
Dr. Gbadegesin revealed that the Olusosun and Solous landfill sites are being decommissioned and replaced with modern transfer loading stations, while new material recovery facilities are being developed to process recyclable waste. He added that the closed landfill sites could eventually be converted into solar farms to generate clean energy.
The LAWMA boss also highlighted the agency's investment in organic waste treatment through biodigesters, noting that food waste is already being converted into biogas to power markets and support Lagos State's transition to compressed natural gas (CNG) for public service vehicles and waste collection fleets.
On indiscriminate waste disposal, he stressed that infrastructure alone cannot solve the problem, describing behavioural change and strict law enforcement as equally important.
"The laws governing environmental sanitation must be obeyed. Enforcement is non-negotiable, but it must also be supported by sustained public education and advocacy," he said.
Responding to calls for decentralising waste management, Dr. Gbadegesin said LAWMA already works closely with local governments, private sector participants, Community Development Associations and environmental health officers to improve waste collection and monitoring across the state.
He disclosed that the agency is expanding recycling collection centres where residents can exchange plastics, paper and other recyclable materials for cash, while also supporting young entrepreneurs interested in establishing recycling businesses.
On flooding, the LAWMA chief said the causes are multifactorial, ranging from blocked drainage channels and illegal developments to indiscriminate dumping of refuse into waterways. He noted that LAWMA continues to collaborate with other state agencies to clear drainage channels, remove obstructions and investigate areas experiencing persistent flooding.
Looking ahead, he expressed optimism that residents would begin to see cleaner surroundings within the next month as access to disposal facilities improves, while more significant progress is expected before the end of the year following the completion of new transfer loading stations, the deployment of additional collection trucks
