California is one of the most dynamic places on the planet.

But it is a case study in how a rich society can spend more and more while producing less and less of what its ordinary citizens need.

My take:

[Lanhee J. Chen @lanheechen]

A significant indication of how much voters in LA are fed up with the status quo: the incumbent city attorney Hydee Feldstein Soto (whose time in office has been marred by controversy), is headed for defeat.

Danny Heil has been a co-author, collaborator, and colleague @HooverInst and will be a fantastic asset to new Fed Chair Kevin Warsh as he settles in to his work there.

[Nick Timiraos @NickTimiraos]

New: Kevin Warsh has tapped two outside associates as advisers—in as temporary contractors for now.

Both are budget policy specialists, and one wrote the Fed chapter of Project 2025, which endorsed a radical restructuring of the central bank. https://t.co/iJnZBQjC8f

The WHO has been compromised for many years. Their role in doing the CCP's bidding during COVID is well documented. And, so, we shouldn't be blamed for our skepticism about how they handle outbreaks now.

Glad to see we're finally doing something about it.

[Fox News @FoxNews]

JUST IN: Secretary of State Marco Rubio slams the World Health Organization for "miserably" failing during the COVID-19 pandemic and covering for China, warning that the U.S. is aggressively restricting travel to block a surging Ebola outbreak from reaching American soil.

"The World Health Organization has unfortunately not done well around the world. I think they failed miserably during COVID. They covered for China.”

“Our number one objective on Ebola, before anything else... has to be we can't have it affect the United States. We can't have Ebola cases coming here."

[Condoleezza Rice @CondoleezzaRice]

Congratulations to our next Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, Kevin Warsh who was confirmed today by the U.S. Senate. I have known Kevin for most of his adult life. I first met him as a student in my international politics class at Stanford University, and it was clear even then that he was exceptional.

Kevin is uniquely suited to serve at this moment. He is battle-tested, principled, and brings the breadth of judgment this role demands. Just as important, he understands how deeply international relations and monetary policy are intertwined - a reality that will only grow more consequential in the years ahead.

He is the right person at the right time. On behalf of his friends and colleagues at the Hoover Institution, we wish him well.

Right on the heels of that disastrous Becerra interview, love the "rapid" in "rapid response" from the team here

By the way, part of being Governor is answering tough questions.

What we're seeing is that Steyer and Porter both have ceilings to their support. That's why it's still a wide-open race.

[Rob Pyers @rpyers]

Two polls out today of the California governor's race would seem to confirm that former HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra has picked up a fair portion of the orphaned Swalwell voters and is likely to be the fallback option for Sacramento's 'Stop Steyer' and 'Stop Porter' camps.

Conservative health care policy expert @lanheechen warns policies that restrict drug prices could have unintended consequences.

"We need to have a system of drug pricing in America that doesn't interfere with what has been an incredible engine of innovation."

"If you are looking to have a significant surgical procedure, you're probably going to do it in America," says @lanheechen.

"Yet we have a health care system that produces unreasonably high rates of infant mortality."

Amazing the manipulation that goes on with ballot designations in CA. Career politicians turn into a "voting rights attorney," "family care navigator," or "housing affordability advocate."

JUST IN: California's Secretary of State has posted the Final Certified List of Candidates for the June 2nd, 2026 Top Two Primary.

24 Democrats, 23 Independents, 12 Republicans, 1 Libertarian, and 1 Peace & Freedom Party candidate qualified in the governor's race.

Major League Baseball is aired in the morning for Japan. So technically they eat breakfast with it being on television.

Here’s their #openingday commercial. No hyperbole, when I say this, it might be greater than any US MLB commercial I’ve seen. Well done and worth the watch for any baseball fan.

[Lanhee J. Chen @lanheechen]

For those counting at home, that's about $9 million spent for each percentage point of support he has in recent surveys; only another $60 million or so to make the top two!

[Rob Pyers @rpyers]

🚨$96 million, 74 more days until the primary.

Tom Steyer kicks in another $8 million to his campaign for California Governor on top of the $88.36 million he's spent so far.

"Having a government monopoly in charge of passenger screening subjects air travelers to political dysfunction in a completely unnecessary way. Airports are high-value infrastructure assets that should continue to operate smoothly even when Congress does not."

The only way to move the needle on the entrenched politics in California are a sustained, long-term investment and focused dedication to the mission of electing candidates committed to reform. Let's hope that's what this is. Otherwise, it's just good money thrown after bad.
