#OTD On Nov. 7th, 1775, John Murray, the Earl of Dunmore and Virginia’s royal governor, issued a proclamation offering freedom to enslaved Africans if they fought for the British. Following the Revolutionary War, thousands of Black Loyalists made their way to what is now Canada.
#OTD Nov. 8th, 1946, Viola Desmond refused to give up her seat in the “white” section of the Roseland Theatre in New Glasgow, NS. Arrested and convicted of tax evasion, she was pardoned by the Nova Scotia government in 2010 and became the face of the Canadian $10 bill in 2016.

#OTD in 1923 Lieutenant-Colonel Kenneth Jacobs was born in Windsor. He served in the Canadian Army during WWII & later the Air Force. #DYK he was the 1st Black Canadian to reach the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1976 & the 1st Black Canadian to have a career as a Flying Officer.

#OTD in 1833 An Act for the Abolition of Slavery throughout the British Colonies, including Canada, received Royal Assent. #DYK this Act took effect on August 1, 1834, but only freed children under the age of six, while others remained as apprentices for four to six years.
#OTD in 2001 activist Carrie Best passes away. She started the newspaper, the Clarion, one of the first Black community newspapers in Nova Scotia. The newspaper ran for three years and then expanded into a national newspaper called The Negro Citizen.
