The ideals that shaped the US Declaration of Independence continue to inspire those working for democracy and human dignity around the world.
Their promise remains unfinished and worth defending.
Happy Fourth of July!
Georgia’s democratic backsliding is accelerating.
At the UN Human Rights Council, LI called for accountability for human rights abuses, the repeal of repressive laws, and the release of those detained for exercising their fundamental rights.

Deeply grateful to @liberalinternat for the trust and the unique opportunity to serve as their speaker on Georgia at the UN Human Rights Council. Thank you for this immense privilege!
Oral Statement by Liberal International👇🏻
“Mr. President,
Georgia’s human rights situation in 2026 is nothing short of a catastrophe, especially considering its speed of decline in the last 18 months, and now having more political prisoners per capita than Russia.
It is the direct consequence of unaddressed state violence against peaceful protesters and efforts to stifle dissent with extensive, often unjustifiable, draconian legislation, as well as financial suffocation of opponents.
The past months have uncovered credible allegations of the use of prohibited chemical substances against peaceful protesters, and the March 2026 OSCE Moscow Mechanism report spoke of near-total impunity for crimes frequently crossing the threshold of torture.
Widespread unlawful and inhuman practices, such as stripping detainees naked or jailing people for merely protesting on a sidewalk, have marred this year in Georgia. A new bill will soon control social media and prosecute online dissent.
As Liberal International reiterates its 2025 recommendations; it also notes that a collective political effort must be deployed by the UN to ensure compliance by the ruling power in Georgia.
Thank you very much.”

Rémy Amahirwa, Ms Ingabire Umuhoza's eldest son, attended the 24th meeting of the 62nd session of the @UN_HRC in Geneva today. The final recommendations of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) on #Rwanda were adopted at this meeting. Rémy proudly delivered two oral recommendation statements. The first one was delivered on behalf of @freedomnoworg and the second on behalf of @liberalinternat . On both occasions, Rémy drew attention to the case of his mother and other prisoners detained for political reasons in Rwanda. He urged Rwanda to adhere to its human rights obligations.

🚨 Liberals demand urgent medical care for @Helenkhosh, leader of political party @DroaParty.
Unlawfully imprisoned for nearly 10 months, her health is rapidly deteriorating while she is being denied proper medical treatment. Without care, she risks irreversible damage to her health that could leave her unable to walk.
The Georgian Dream must act now and ensure Elene Khoshtaria receives the treatment she urgently needs.

Ms Ingabire's sons held a productive meeting with 2025 Nobel Prize winner @MariaCorinaYA on the sidelines of the @OsloFF today, as part of their efforts to advocate for their mother's situation. #Rwanda
During the Oslo Freedom Forum, I had the privilege of meeting the courageous children of Victoire Ingabire Umuhoza, recipient of Liberal International’s Prize for Freedom.
Victoire is a woman of unbreakable strength. She has paid the price of persecution and years of sacrifice for daring to dream of a free, reconciled, and democratic Rwanda. She has spent more than nine years in prison in her own country, from 2010 to 2018 and again since June 2025.
Listening to her children speak about their mother, with both deep concern and boundless pride, brought to mind the sacrifice of thousands upon thousands of Venezuelan families. In their eyes, I saw the same expression I have seen in my own children, and in the children of every political prisoner and every exile from our homeland. As I embraced them, I conveyed the strength of all Venezuelan mothers.
Our struggle is universal. No matter the language or the distance, the longing for freedom is the same.
Dear Remy and Rist, your mother is not only a heroine for Rwanda, but an inspiration to all those around the world who confront tyranny with courage and dignity.
I carry your testimonies with me, engraved in my heart. They are proof that the love and example of a mother or father who fights for justice are forces that no prison can ever contain.
For a free Venezuela and a free Rwanda!
Hasta el final!
