Expensing provides large businesses with large net subsidies for debt-financed investments, and puts an even heavier thumb on the scale in favor of capital investments over hiring workers. There are better ways to accelerate economic growth and ensure it is widely shared. 17/17
My new piece in @DemJournal on why Congress should repeal expensing and move back toward economic depreciation for large businesses, as was the law for most of the income tax’s history. Could raise ~$2 trillion over 10 years. Here’s 4 reasons why: 1/17 https://t.co/2nI3TEraHb
There are likely far more cost-effective ways to stimulate U.S. investment than expensing. I estimate under reasonable assumptions one could save ~$1.3 trillion & maintain the same functional incentives for US investment thru different tax policies. 16/17 https://t.co/kPZaIbIHSw
Glad to see @MittRomney come out in favor of higher tax rates on the wealthy and ending stepped-up basis. Stepped-up basis is the worst of all worlds from a policy perspective – benefits the wealthiest, encourages inefficient investment, and incentivizes complex tax planning. 1/3
We’ve reached a point where any mix of solutions to our nation’s economic problems is going to involve the wealthiest Americans contributing more. https://t.co/m0zXuXeC43
