Ready to take on the 2020-2021 school year, Super Hero style at Thurmont Primary! Thanks to @MBaiseyFCPS for the awesome energy to start off the year!
@FCPSBookClub A6: My biggest take away is all students can benefit from brain-aligned regulatory practices. Also, for our students who suffer from chronic stress, it will take patience, dedication, time and self regulation (for the teacher/staff) to help them heal. #fcpsbookclub
@FCPSBookClub A5: Yes I see myself becoming a “touch point.” Collaborating with our teams/staff will make sure all students have a touch point. It will also be important to realize some students may make a better connection with staff who may not be in the classroom. #fcpsbookclub
@FCPSBookClub A4: I am excited to incorporate regulation strategies in my classroom. I used some simple breathing strategies last school year and it helped me and my students! It will be interesting to determine how best to incorporate them through virtual learning. #fcpsbookclub
@FCPSBookClub A3: I like “Animal Symbols” p115. It is an indirect way to learn more about our students and their home life. Also, ECE students are always talking about animals and what they like! #fcpsbookclub
@FCPSBookClub A2: Discipline is “prevention focused and looks forward” p77. When we provide ‘punishment’ we are looking back into the past. Discipline is helping students learn how to regulate their emotions. #fcpsbookclub
@FCPSBookClub A1: The multi-system triangle helps us as educators to tailor emotional/regulatory support to students in each tier, just like we tailor academic instruction. #fcpsbookclub
@FCPSBookClub A4: I love the remember to breathe strategy. I use this a lot with my students. We do hot chocolate breathing and candle breathing. I also like the idea of the Family Tree. Our classroom is our school family. #fcpsbookclub
@FCPSBookClub A3: Our schools need to be a place of compassion where all students feel connected, safe and loved. This starts with ourself and how we view and treat our emotional regulation. Our students/staff are watching us to see how we react to stressful situations. #fcpsbookclub
@FCPSBookClub Long states, “kids in stress create in us their feelings, and if we are not trained to this process, we (the adult) will mirror their behaviors” (p29). I think of several students I taught and how I needed time to self regulate emotionally before I could help them. #fcpsbookclub
@FCPSBookClub A1: Our students who are experiencing constant trauma are “frozen in trauma” (p9), but because of neuroplasticity, healthy co-regulation from an adult and time there is hope for all students. #fcpsbookclub
