🚂 On this day in 1830, transport history was made with the grand opening of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway - the world's very first intercity passenger service.
It was a monumental leap forward for industry and travel, drawing international crowds and celebration. However, the historic occasion was sadly overshadowed by a notorious tragedy.
During a stop along the 31 mile route, William Huskisson, the Member of Parliament for Liverpool, stepped onto the parallel track. Tragically, he was struck by the approaching pioneering locomotive 'Rocket'. He was rushed to the nearby vicarage in Eccles, where he passed away later that evening, inadvertently becoming the first widely reported railway passenger casualty in history.
Today, 196 years later, we look back at the incredible engineering marvel that sparked a global railway revolution, whilst remembering the tragic loss that occurred on its inaugural day.
