A NYT investigation confirms what educators have long known: social media companies made deliberate choices to capture students' attention during the school day, despite internal warnings about the harm to learning and mental health.
Educators have carried the weight of this for years. We owe it to our students to demand accountability and keep classrooms focused on learning.

Mattering is feeling both valued AND knowing that you add value. Adults need to feel they matter but students do too!
Mattering creates a greater sense of connection and feelings of belonging. People of all ages benefit from knowing their presence makes a difference.
How do students at your school know that they are important members of the group?

Wow! Thank you so much to Melissa for gifting these crafts for my students. Iβm looking forward to trying out some new novel projects with these when we are done with our state test! π«ΆπΌπ₯°

I so frequently hear from students, βIβm dumbβ or βIβm going to fail this.β
But to prep for our last district assessment, we worked HARD all quarter on literary analysis. I scaffolded. I met in small groups. I provided immediate feedback. Before the test, I gave them motivational pep talks to show that I truly believed in their abilities.
When scores came out, I showed them how their class average beat out ALL of the top performing schools in our county AND bested the county average by 9%.
I rewarded them with praise for their efforts and provided snacks (of course β theyβre teenagers). And I finally heard: βYeah! Thatβs because weβre smart!β π
And then, what do you know? On the reading iready diagnostic this week, I saw 90% of this class reach typical progress, with about 50% reaching their stretch goals. We celebrated this, too.
March Madness wonβt be the same without Sister Jean. Thinking about the Loyola University Chicago community and everyone who loved this remarkable woman.Β https://t.co/9O09E9zdMA

M: "That's fantastic! But we all teach literacy. Tell me about your vocabulary instruction." #intentional#contentareas

8. I feel like this type of review teaches students how to study and sets them up for success later on. I have nothing against Blooket or Kahoot. But I often find that students just randomly click buttons to win the game rather than taking the time to think about the content.
