The most expensive part of a hospital bill may never touch the hospital at all.
A patient admitted for care has no way of knowing whether the price on a medical consumable reflects its actual cost or a markup fixed long before it ever reached the ward. That gap in information is, at its core, a public health issue.
A survey of hospital consumables in Maharashtra found an IV infusion set with a trade price of ₹11.05 carrying a printed MRP of ₹325 ; a markup of 2,841%. A syringe procured at ₹6.75 carried an MRP of ₹57.20. A catheter procured at ₹29.41 carried an MRP of ₹310.
These are not elective purchases. Patients cannot compare prices, seek alternatives, or question a number printed on a box while receiving care and the MRP itself is often fixed upstream by manufacturers and distributors, disconnected from the trade price by a wide, unexplained margin. The result is a system where the party bearing the cost has the least information to evaluate it.
The regulatory gap is structural: scheduled medicines are capped under the Drugs (Prices Control) Order, 2013. Most medical devices and consumables are not leaving both the pricing and the information around it almost entirely unmonitored.
A review of these findings and clear guidelines on the permissible gap between trade procurement price and declared MRP have been recommended to the Department of Pharmaceuticals and the NPPA ; a step toward closing not just a pricing gap, but the information gap patients are left to bear alone.

When geopolitical extremes become everyday conditions, traditional planning breaks down. I’ll be making this case in my keynote at the #Crossdive 2026 foresight conference on how geopolitical strategic foresight helps leaders in India and beyond navigate a world where old planning assumptions no longer hold. Looking forward to the discussion in Pune!
Meanwhile, Happy Independence Day 🇮🇳, India!
India's 'geometric' diplomacy.
Counter intuitive.
Imagine yourself securing a promotion while working in a office where competing groups are in a tussle but everyone is okay to deal with you.
🇮🇳🇺🇸🇨🇳 India is playing both America and China... and winning.
Ian Bremmer called it the strongest geopolitical position of any middle power on the planet, not because India is the biggest military or the richest economy, but because it refuses to pick a side and still gets invited to every table.
Look at the map, India sits in the Quad with the U.S., Japan, and Australia, tightening security ties, sharing intel, buying weapons.
At the same time it keeps a stable (if cool) relationship with China, its biggest trading partner, and leads the Global South in a way Beijing never could.
Most developing countries trust New Delhi more than they trust the Chinese creditor, and that’s the pivot-state advantage: Economic scale big enough to matter, geography that gives it insulation, diplomatic room that smaller countries can only dream of.
While Europe frets about American reliability and everyone else gets squeezed, India deepens partnerships without locking itself into anyone’s dependency.
In a G-zero world, where no single power is writing the rules anymore, this flexibility is pure power.
Influence increasingly belongs to the countries that can work with competing giants and still walk away independent. India is already doing it, and the gap between it and everyone else is only getting wider.

Wealthy conglomerates in India must focus on R&D and tech led manufacturing for next 10 years, rather than launching another paints or jewellery brands. Time for commodity consumerism led growth is over. Bravo Mahindra group.
🚨 Mahindra has launched a new company, Novavayu Aerospace, to manufacture aircraft and defence equipment, marking its entry into aircraft manufacturing in India.

A brief stint with sculpture left me thinking. In the age of generative AI, is there a place for traditional art? How long? It probably is no longer about the outcome or the artefact but more and more about the creator/artist...

If a salaried person wants to build a software application or digital services agency, the entry barrier is virtually zero.
They just need a laptop and an internet connection.
But if the same person wants to start manufacturing...
They need:
• Land
• Factory space
• Expensive machinery
• 6-12 months of approvals
• Huge upfront capital
My suggestion to the Government of India:
Build Manufacturing Parks for first-time entrepreneurs.
Instead of selling 10-acre plots, create buildings with 500-1,000 sq. ft. ready-to-use factory units.
Every unit should come with:
• 3-phase electricity already connected
• Pollution & fire approvals already cleared
• Shared CNC machines, injection moulding, testing labs & warehouses
• Common logistics and loading docks
• Month-to-month rentals instead of land purchases
• Single online portal to book a unit within 7 days
Let engineers keep their jobs while testing manufacturing on a small scale.
We built co-working spaces for software.
It's time we built co-factories for manufacturing.

This is not a "real story". This is just a story.
Indians earn, save, and spend in INR. This sort of misrepresentation, coming from a professor, seems purposefully creating fear, uncertainty, and doubt.
The USD itself has lost ~32% of its purchasing power in the last 15 years. This is because of inflation.
Controlled inflation (under 5-6%) is considered normal and even healthy for a growing economy. A fast growing economy like India tends to have higher inflation naturally.
In fact, central bankers and finance ministers get worried if inflation drops too low. Focusing only on the nominal USD rate without this context is purposefully misleading.
So while INR has lost its purchasing power, it is natural just like the USD has lost its purchasing power. Someone's savings in India, to be used in India, suddenly doesn't become 50% less due to USD/INR rate increase.
One day in the coming time, INR will suddenly start appreciating against the USD quickly. Then what will they say? They will change the attack to "inflation" then. These are the same people talking about de-dollarization and USD "crashing soon" as well.
So assuming they are right, if suddenly we wake up to 1 USD = 50 INR, did every Indian become twice as rich in the night? Because its GDP and GDP per capita is suddenly 2x now in USD terms? No.
The real story is, for those who can understand these things and see the pattern, there's an orchestrated attempt from a large network of anti-establishment types to fear monger and incite Indians to try cause political and economic instability in India.
Momentary lapse of reason in language, by those in power, can give spark a 'hyper-social-inflammation'. Capable of sparking a change which the fossilised structures tend to waste in rhetoric.
