In a milestone for psychiatric medicine, a clinical formulation of LSD known as MM120 (lysergide d-tartrate) is advancing toward potential Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval by 2027.

Developed by biotechnology firm MindMed, the investigational drug is designed to treat generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Recent clinical trial results published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) demonstrated that a single 100-microgram dose of MM120 led to rapid, robust, and sustained anxiety reduction for up to 12 weeks.

Unlike other experimental psychedelic regimens that depend on intensive, costly psychotherapy, MM120's protocol requires only supervised clinical monitoring, making it far more scalable and cost-effective for mainstream healthcare systems.

The potential approval represents a desperately needed breakthrough for the 26 million adults in the United States living with generalized anxiety disorder, a condition where first-line treatments fail up to half of all patients. Remarkably, the FDA has not approved a new medication for GAD since 2007. Recognizing this urgent unmet need, the agency previously granted MM120 Breakthrough Therapy Designation, an expedited status that accelerates development and regulatory review. As Phase 3 trials continue, this research marks a historic transition, validating decades of early psychedelic theories with modern scientific rigor and offering hope for a paradigm shift in mental health treatment.
