It is so frustrating to watch a discussion about the child tax credit and see Republicans embrace universality but with a work requirement, and Democrats embrace unconditionality but with targeting.

Why do Republicans insist on punishing poor kids for having unemployed parents and why do Democrats insist on making the poor jump through hoops to prove they aren't rich?

Just stop it. Embrace both universality AND unconditionality. No means-testing. No work requirements. Just get money to families for their kids, and use taxes to reverse-target the rich.

We are spending over $1 trillion a year on the downstream costs of child poverty. It makes no sense to withhold $10 from a poor kid only to spend $100 on them as an adult. It also makes no sense to withhold $10 from a rich kid when you tax their parents $100 more.

A monthly universal child allowance plus progressive taxes is the way to go.

Then also do #UBI for adults for the same reasons using the same design principles.
