VIDEO | Delhi: Never seen such atrocities even during Emergency; John Brittas was roughed up by police without any reason, subjected to physical assault, says CPI(M) general secretary M A Baby.
John Brittas was admitted to RML hospital for an X-ray scan to examine any injuries to his chest.

Visited Comrade John Brittas at RML Hospital in Delhi, where he was admitted after being brutally attacked by the Delhi Police.
The police have turned Delhi into a war zone. Scores of student and youth activists, including SFI President Adarsh M Saji and DYFI CEC member Jaick C Thomas, were assaulted inside police vehicles that have been turned into torture camps. Women are being cruelly attacked and detained for hours inside mobile jails.
Modi, Amit Shah and Mohan Bhagwat must not be under the impression that unleashing state repression will kill the movement to oust Gyanesh Kumar. The students and youth are fighting to save our democracy. They will not be deterred by these cowardly attempts to break their bodies. Their spirit will not be broken, and their resolve will only grow stronger.
In the repression unleashed on protesters in Delhi today, the Delhi Police arrested hundreds of leaders of political parties, civil society organisations, students and youth. Almost the entire leadership of the CPI(M) was taken into police custody in Delhi today. Many of those arrested were roughed up and manhandled by the police, leading to injuries to some, including Polit Bureau member Tapan Sen and MP Sivadasan.
It is reprehensible that CPI(M) Polit Bureau Member and Kerala Leader of the Opposition Com. Pinarayi Vijayan and several others were confined to police vehicles for hours. They were denied food and water and were not even allowed to take essential medications. Several women, including Polit Bureau member Mariam Dhawale, who were taken to the Maurya Enclave Police Station, were not even allowed to use the washroom. The mobile phones of a batch of comrades, including MP A.A. Rahim, were taken by the police.
I appeal to people to join the countrywide protests being organised by the CPI(M) against this repression, demanding that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar be held accountable and removed, that the SIR process be stopped, and that the names of all eligible voters who have been deleted be restored to the electoral rolls.
Denying opposition MPs the right to raise their voices at Jantar Mantar, a historic centre of people’s struggles, shows the Modi government’s naked authoritarianism and contempt for democratic rights.
The attempt to crush dissent by unleashing a reign of terror in the national capital will not succeed. The government may use police and central forces to suppress peaceful protests and protect Gyanesh Kumar, but it cannot shield him forever. If this repression continues, the people will consign Modi and Amit Shah, along with Gyanesh Kumar, to the dustbin of history.
All democratic forces must unite and intensify the struggle.
Dastak (SFI's cultural wing) and Janam answered that there will be singing in dark times. Delhi Police, egged on by the RSS, tried to suppress their singing in Connaught Place this evening. Beaten, bruised and detained, they didn't stop singing. Kudos to them. We stand with you and sing with you.
Gyanesh Kumar, it's done. You need to go!
Delhi Police, remember that India is a democracy and we have the right to protest.
The impunity with which the Delhi Police has unleashed violence against protesters over the last couple of days, with police personnel without name tags using brutal force and citizens being taken away in unmarked cars, shows the callous disregard of the ruling dispensation and Home Minister Amit Shah for the rule of law in the nation’s capital.
The refusal to file a FIR against a police official accused of sexually assaulting a woman journalist reveals that sexual assault is being used as a tool to target and intimidate women protesters and journalists covering their protests. All this is being done to protect Gyanesh Kumar, who as Chief Election Commissioner has turned the Election Commission into a slaughterhouse of democracy.
Amit Shah and Delhi Police should read the writing on the wall — the people have spoken, Gyanesh Kumar must go. Violence and thuggery will not deter the protesters who are fighting to save our democracy.
It was a privilege to inaugurate the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Bhavan in Daryaganj, Delhi, the new Central Committee office of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI).
At a time when a powerful youth movement is emerging across India, DYFI, together with SFI and other student and youth organisations, is playing an important role in mobilising young people. The new office, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Bhavan will, I hope, become an important centre for this continuing struggle and for building a stronger, united and progressive youth movement across the country.
Congratulations to the students and youth who gathered in huge numbers at Jantar Mantar and elsewhere today to demand the ouster of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and defend democracy and the right to vote.
On Gandhi Jayanti, it is pertinent to recall that Mahatma Gandhi’s first political struggle was to defend the voting rights of Indian migrants in South Africa. Today, our students and youth have shown us that they will ensure that our republic will continue to uphold the principles of Gandhi, and not of Godse.
The message is loud and clear — Gyanesh Kumar, It's Time To Go!
CPI(M) congratulates the youth, students, and the large number of people who braved all the restrictions and came out in protest today. The movement to save democracy, and for the neutrality of State institutions such as the ECI will continue. The Party appeals to the people to strengthen this ongoing struggle by joining in large numbers.
Captain Smit Machchhar’s remarkable act of valour mid-air aboard flight FZ1073 saved hundreds of lives and prevented a great tragedy. Salute his bravery and presence of mind, even while being seriously injured. Wishing him a speedy recovery and lasting good health.
India has a choice. It can be one more country jostling for favour in Washington, or it can reclaim the role it once played — the moral voice of nations that were told their place in the world and refused to accept it.
My piece in today’s Indian Express on the BRICS Summit and the way forward for India.
The Election Commission's statement is part of a face-saving exercise that does not address the serious questions raised by disclosures about its functioning.
In fact, some of the decisions taken by the ECI, including the decision that the agenda will be circulated in advance and minutes will be issued for all its meetings, only further expose the farcical manner in which its operations were being carried out.
The revelation made by former Keralam Chief Secretary Jiji Thomson that the current Chief Election Commissioner had offered him a BJP ticket for the 2019 General Election, and attempted to persuade him to accept the offer by alluding to the possibility of being made a Cabinet Minister, points to where Gyanesh Kumar’s loyalties lie. If he was then operating as a recruiting agent for the BJP while working as a civil servant, he is now a willing footsoldier for the BJP-RSS while holding a constitutional post.
Gyanesh Kumar must go, and he should be impeached if he does not resign. The SIR process must be halted immediately. Voting rights should be restored to all those who have been wrongfully excluded. Nothing less can restore faith in the credibility of the ECI and in our democracy.
A meeting of the Election Commission of India was held today, 26 September 2026, at 3:00 PM at Nirvachan Sadan, New Delhi.
Chief Election Commissioner Shri Gyanesh Kumar and Election Commissioners Dr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Dr. Vivek Joshi were present in today’s meeting.

CPI(M) General Secretary M A Baby addresses the media after visiting Aam Aadmi Party National Convenor and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal at his residence in Lodhi Road, New Delhi.
CPI(M) General Secretary M A Baby visited Aam Aadmi Party National Convenor and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal at his residence in Lodhi Road, New Delhi, and discussed about the Enforcement Directorate's illegal actions targeting CPI(M) Polit Bureau member, former Chief Minister and present Leader of Opposition in Keralam Pinarayi Vijayan and the developments following the publication of the Indian Express report exposing the authoritarian manner in which the Chief Election Commissioner is functioning.
Comrade M A Baby highlighted the extraordinary situation in which the credibility of the Election Commission and Indian democracy is at stake and expressed the urgent need for coordinated action to defend constitutional values and citizens' right to vote. He also invited Arvind Kejriwal to attend protest meetings being organized by the Left Democratic Front in Keralam against the misuse of central investigative agencies and the attempt to undermine our federal republic.
Strongly condemn the Delhi Police crackdown on the SFI-DYFI protest demanding the immediate removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, revocation of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), and reforms to the Election Commission.
Modi and Amit Shah are mistaken if they think the brutal use of force against peaceful students and youth, and the dragging of people’s representatives through the streets, will silence democratic protests. Gyanesh Kumar must be removed from office for undermining the credibility of the Election Commission. Cracking down on protests and suppressing dissent will not save him.
Delhi Police cracked down on a peaceful SFI-DYFI protest march to the Election Commission of India office in New Delhi, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, revocation of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), and reforms to the Election Commission.
DYFI All India President and Rajya Sabha MP A A Rahim, Rajya Sabha MP V Sivadasan, SFI All India President Adarsh M Saji, and several SFI Delhi leaders and activists were detained during the protest. The police brutally manhandled student and youth activists, including women. SFI and DYFI condemned the police action and demanded the immediate and unconditional release of all leaders and activists, strict action against the police personnel responsible for the assault, and an end to the suppression of democratic dissent.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta's "Naxalite" remark, during the hearing of a petition in Supreme Court challenging amendments to the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act 1971 with regard to the singing of Vande Mataram, is unbecoming of the office that he holds.
The Solicitor's remark directed at the petitioner, renowned artist TM Krishna, was undoubtedly an attempt to intimidate him and public intellectuals like him from expressing dissent and raising concerns about where we are headed as a society. It is appalling that when Senior Advocate Dr S Muralidhar raised his strong objection, the Solicitor repeated the remark instead of withdrawing it. It is also highly unfortunate that the Court did not intervene and castigate him for his choice of words.
The bogey of "Dimagi Naxals" was raised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his Independence Day address to the nation. We now have one of our highest law officers repeating the same in open court. Full solidarity with TM Krishna and Dr S Muralidhar. Such intimidation will not deter those who uphold constitutional values from speaking out against authoritarian diktats.
The Modi government should reject the new US Sanctions Act and defend India’s sovereignty! Dictating the foreign and economic policies of other countries is a blatant violation of their sovereignty and dignity. It cannot and should not be tolerated.
By arming the US President with sweeping powers to impose tariffs of up to 100 per cent on countries purchasing Russian oil and gas, the US seeks to arrogate to itself the right to decide who purchases oil from whom. It is also seeking to weaponise trade.
India is among the countries that are being targeted for its substantial imports of Russian crude. This can lead to escalating fuel prices and galloping inflation, resulting in a cascading impact on the Indian economy.
The BJP-led Union government must stop treating the US as a strategic partner and stop succumbing to its intimidation tactics. India's economic and foreign-policy choices cannot be dictated by the interests of US imperialism.
From New York to Berlin, the socialist alternative is winning!
Heartiest congratulations to Comrade @ElifEralpBerlin on leading @dielinkeberlin to a historic victory. Hope that you will be able to fulfill your promises centered on housing rights, social justice, and dignity.
Berlin’s clear mandate against conservative rule proves that a programmatic alternative can push back the right wing. Your victory is an inspiration to all those who pursue class politics. More power to the working people!
Congratulations to all comrades and the people of Rajasthan on the historic victory in Nokha Nagar Palika and in wards across the state where the CPI(M) has registered wins.
The red flag will rise up everywhere we confront the communal venom of the BJP-RSS and take up people’s issues. Onwards!✊🏿
The CPI(M) has registered a historic victory in the elections to Nokha Nagar Palika (Municipality) in Bikaner district, Rajasthan, winning 29 of the total 45 seats. The BJP secured 13 seats, while independent candidates won the remaining three seats. With this historic victory, the CPI(M) has taken control of the Nokha Municipality, which had been ruled alternately by the NCP and BJP for years.
