A new annual report from government watchdog Citizens Budget Commission finds New York state and its localities are number one in taxing and number two in spending.

Thomas Cole helped Americans see the Hudson Valley and Catskills as landscapes worthy of admiration and protection. Theodore Roosevelt believed a growing nation had an obligation to conserve its natural inheritance. Yet today, New York risks ignoring both legacies. We cannot claim to strengthen our environment and resilience while treating our farms, forests, waterways and viewsheds as expendable.

The authors call for stronger state planning and faster action. State coordination has a place: the grid does not stop at a town line. But expanding Albany’s authority without strengthening local planning and participation invites reckless decisions. When those decisions damage a community while failing to deliver affordable, reliable power, they are feckless ones, too.

The authors say New York State should take the driver’s seat. Given Albany’s record, I’m not ready to hand over the keys. Too often, the state sets a destination, ignores warnings from the people who know the terrain, and drives toward a cliff while calling it progress.
