Inoculating dry beans has potential to reduce nitrogen fertilizer costs. This year we haven't seen nodule count differences between beans inoculated with LegumeFix and those without. Stay tuned for yield results!
Thank You for Joining Us! ๐ฑ
A big thank you to everyone who joined us for the Manitoba Dry Bean Tour on August 11 at the AAFC Morden Research & Development Centre!
It was a fantastic morning of learning, discussion and sharing knowledge about dry bean production in Manitoba. We truly appreciate the growers, researchers, industry partners, speakers and everyone who took the time to attend and contribute to the day.
A special thank you to AAFC Morden Research & Development Centre for hosting us and to all of our speakers and partners who helped make the tour a success.
Thank you for making the Manitoba Dry Bean Tour a great day!
The On-Farm Network has begun field-scale trial harvesting!
The first to come off was a pea double vs. single inoculation strategy trial located in the RM of Woodlands. Stay tuned for results!
What a fantastic day in the Parkland! Farmers and agronomists gathered at Sirski Farms near Dauphin for the 2026 On-Farm Research Tour, co-hosted with Fertilizer Canada, @mb_cropalliance and @ManitobaCanola.
Key takeaways:
Inoculants: 13 of 14 Parkland OFN trials showed no statistical yield gain from double inoculating soybeans with a crop history.
Fungicides: 71 OFN trials show soybean fungicide paid off only 8% of the time.
Tile drainage & soil pit insights with Manitoba Ag specialists.

Soybean aphid populations are increasing in some fields! Soybeans are most vulnerable to yield loss from R1 to R5 (flowering through pod fill), making this a critical window for scouting.
Scouting Checklist:
โข Action Threshold: 250 aphids/plant AND rising
โข Track natural predators (lady beetles, lacewings, pirate bugs)
โข Sample 30โ100 plants across the field

Reports are coming in of grasshopper feeding reaching levels that warrant control in pulse & soybean crops.
With crops currently pod-filling, tolerance to defoliation is at its lowest and yield loss risk is at its highest!
Defoliation Thresholds (R1 to R5):
โข Soybeans: 15%
โข Dry beans: 15%
โข Count: 8โ12 grasshoppers/mยฒ

Late summer is when soybean stem diseases start making an appearanceโand when they can impact yield the most!
Keep an eye out for:
White Mold (Sclerotinia)
Phytophthora Root Rot
Northern Stem Canker
Pod & Stem Blight, Anthracnose & SDS

Heat and drought stress mean itโs time to scout for Two-Spotted Spider Mites!
Early damage looks a lot like drought stress, making them easy to miss until numbers spike.
What to watch for:
โข White speckling on upper leaves & webbing underneath
โข Infestations starting at field edges
โข Threshold: 20% of leaves infested

Growing field peas? Check with your grain buyer BEFORE applying pre-harvest glyphosate! Some buyers will not accept treated peas.
If applying, timing is everything. Applying too early risks unacceptable residue levels, plus yield & quality loss.
Check out our guide on what to look and listen for to ensure you hit the right application timing (80% of pods golden brown, seeds rattling in lowest pods): https://t.co/zA2OWRT6Mc
