The On-Farm Network has begun field-scale trial harvesting!
The first to come off was a pea double vs. single inoculation strategy trial located in the RM of Woodlands. Stay tuned for results!

What a fantastic day in the Parkland! Farmers and agronomists gathered at Sirski Farms near Dauphin for the 2026 On-Farm Research Tour, co-hosted with Fertilizer Canada, @mb_cropalliance and @ManitobaCanola.

Key takeaways:

Inoculants: 13 of 14 Parkland OFN trials showed no statistical yield gain from double inoculating soybeans with a crop history.

Fungicides: 71 OFN trials show soybean fungicide paid off only 8% of the time.

Soybean aphid populations are increasing in some fields! Soybeans are most vulnerable to yield loss from R1 to R5 (flowering through pod fill), making this a critical window for scouting.

Scouting Checklist:
• Action Threshold: 250 aphids/plant AND rising
• Track natural predators (lady beetles, lacewings, pirate bugs)
• Sample 30–100 plants across the field

Reports are coming in of grasshopper feeding reaching levels that warrant control in pulse & soybean crops.

With crops currently pod-filling, tolerance to defoliation is at its lowest and yield loss risk is at its highest!

Defoliation Thresholds (R1 to R5):
• Soybeans: 15%
• Dry beans: 15%
• Count: 8–12 grasshoppers/m²

Heat and drought stress mean it’s time to scout for Two-Spotted Spider Mites!

Early damage looks a lot like drought stress, making them easy to miss until numbers spike.

What to watch for:
• White speckling on upper leaves & webbing underneath
• Infestations starting at field edges
• Threshold: 20% of leaves infested

Growing field peas? Check with your grain buyer BEFORE applying pre-harvest glyphosate! Some buyers will not accept treated peas.

If applying, timing is everything. Applying too early risks unacceptable residue levels, plus yield & quality loss.
