On October 8, 2023 - one day after the Hamas massacre - pediatricians at Israel's National Human Milk Bank realized something no milk bank in the world had ever faced: dozens of healthy babies whose mothers had been murdered, abducted to Gaza, wounded, or called up for emergency IDF duty.

The bank, operated by Magen David Adom, Israel's National Emergency Service, tripled its activity overnight - recruiting over 200 new donors, running MDA motorcycles through missile fire to collect milk daily, and working around the clock to ensure every baby received safe, screened donor breast milk. One of the babies' mothers was an Israeli Air Force Apache helicopter pilot who cut short her maternity leave to fly combat missions. "Giving of your own milk, giving part of yourself while nursing your own baby is the height of unconditional love," said the bank's chairman. More than 80% of families said the donated milk helped them cope with the consequences of the war. "They said they felt the whole country supported them." This is Israel. 🇮🇱🤍

As of 12:40, a woman approximately 35 years old was rescued without signs of life. MDA paramedics pronounced her dead.

After complex rescue operations, MDA paramedics pronounced the death of a man and a woman, both approximately 80 years old, and are continuing to provide medical cover for the continuation of the rescue operations.
