MEDIA RELEASE
Residents and visitors asked to use caution after cougar sighting in Moose Lake area
May 13, 2026 – The Municipal District of Bonnyville is asking residents and visitors to remain aware and take precautions following a reported cougar sighting in the Moose Lake area.
There is no indication of immediate threat to the general public. Cougar sightings are uncommon, but do occur in rural and wooded areas throughout Alberta. People are encouraged to remain calm, stay alert, and take practical steps to reduce the risk of wildlife encounters.
“Our message is simple — be aware, do not panic, and report concerns through the proper channels,” said Luis Gandolfi, Director of Protective Services. “We understand these reports can cause concern, especially for families living near lakes and wooded areas. Please remember large predators live in the countryside, and for the most part, they go unnoticed as they don’t like the company of humans. That said, there are some steps you can take to protect yourself, your children, and your pets.”
Residents and visitors in rural areas where sightings have occurred are encouraged to follow these safety tips:
- Keep children close and within sight, especially near tree lines, trails, and wooded areas.
- Keep pets on a leash and do not leave pet food outdoors.
- Avoid walking alone at dawn, dusk, or at night when wildlife is often more active. Carry animal repellant spray when walking in a rural setting.
- Make noise when walking in wooded or low-visibility areas.
- Do not approach a cougar or other wildlife.
- Never feed wildlife.
- Remove attractants from your property, including unsecured garbage, outdoor pet food, and anything that may attract deer or smaller animals.
If you encounter an aggressive cougar:
- Stay calm and do not run.
- Keep the animal in sight and do not turn your back to it.
- Make yourself appear large by standing tall and raising your arms.
- Back away slowly and give the animal space to leave.
- Pick up small children immediately.
- If the cougar behaves aggressively, make noise, maintain eye contact, and be prepared to defend yourself.
Call 911 immediately if a cougar is posing an immediate threat to public safety, is behaving aggressively, or refuses to leave an area where people are present. To report a cougar sighting that is not an emergency, call Alberta Fish and Wildlife at 1-800-642-3800 or local authorities for guidance.
The M.D. is monitoring the situation and will continue to work with the appropriate wildlife and public safety partners as needed. Residents are asked to avoid spreading unconfirmed information on social media and to rely on official updates for accurate information.
The safety of residents and visitors remains our priority. By staying aware and following basic wildlife safety practices, the community can help reduce risk while allowing wildlife officers to assess and respond appropriately.
