Due to the increasing risk of further potential flash flooding the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade has upgraded our advice level for the Nepal-Tibet border area to Level 4 ‘Do Not Travel’

Advice for New Zealanders in Nepal:
- Contact your family and travel company to confirm your safety.
- Register your travel plans on SafeTravel and keep this updated as your plans change.
- Move away from riverbanks and low-lying areas and seek higher ground immediately.
- Follow evacuation and safety instructions from Nepali authorities.
- Avoid travel on the Prithvi Highway, the Galchhi–Nuwakot–Rasuwa–Syafrubesi road, and the Mugling–Narayangadh road until authorities remove restrictions.
- Do not travel into flood-affected areas.
- Monitor local news and official government alerts and only rely on verified information to avoid spreading unconfirmed reports.
- If you are in Rasuwagadhi, Timure, Syafrubesi, Langtang, or another affected area, contact the 24/7 Consular Emergency line on [phone].

Nepal holds a special place in the hearts of New Zealanders.
It has been devastating to see the impact of Wednesday’s landslide and flash flooding, and our thoughts are with the affected communities.
New Zealand will contribute NZ$1 million to support the Nepal Red Cross Society to deliver emergency assistance including shelter, water and sanitation. Another NZ$1 million of funding will be made available to other international humanitarian partners with the capacity to provide essential relief and early recover assistance.

On 26 August 2026, major flash flooding and a mudslide occurred in the Nepal-China border area, causing significant damage.

Hundreds of people are believed to be missing in Nepal including foreign nationals.

On 18 August, 🇳🇿 New Zealand, together with 🇮🇩 Indonesia, 🇵🇭 the Philippines as EAS Chair and EAS ECTF Chair for 2026, the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE), and the ASEAN Secretariat, co-hosted the EAS Workshop on Energy Security: The Potential of Geothermal Energy.

✨ This was the first EAS discussion of its kind, focussing on geothermal energy. The Workshop brought together EAS Participating Countries and the EAS Energy Cooperation Task Force (EAS ECTF) to strengthen shared understanding, exchange knowledge and explore the potential of geothermal energy in supporting more diverse, secure and resilient energy systems across @ASEAN. 🌏🤝

The Workshop provided a timely platform to explore geothermal opportunities at both large-scale and localised levels, with the potential to contribute to long-term energy security and regional resilience.

🎯 Aligned with the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) 2026-2030 and wider EAS priorities under the EAS Plan of Action 2024-2028, the dialogue underscored the value of regional cooperation and peer exchange in advancing a more resilient energy future.

On #WorldHumanitarianDay, New Zealand acknowledges the dedication and courage of humanitarian personnel serving those in need. Their work saves lives, upholds dignity, and alleviates the suffering of people in times of emergency.

In the last year, New Zealand humanitarians supported Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands with relief supplies and support following Tropical Cyclone Maila, and deployed NZ Medical Assistance Team (NZMAT) to support Samoa's dengue response. Beyond the Pacific, New Zealand provided funding to humanitarian responses in Myanmar, Ukraine, the occupied Palestinian Territories, Sudan and Afghanistan, helping trusted partners deliver life-saving support where it was needed most.

Humanitarians deliver this support with their own lives at risk. In 2025, 350 aid workers were killed, 235 were kidnapped. Violence against humanitarians must stop.
