One of my favorite reminders from the Qur’an. 🤍

There’s only one passage that is repeated back-to-back, word for word:

“Indeed, with hardship comes ease. Indeed, with hardship comes ease.” (Qur’an 94:5–6) ✨

That repetition is worth pausing on. It’s as if we’re being reminded: Don’t miss this.

Whatever you’re going through today, keep going. 🌿 Better days have a way of finding us, often when we least expect them.

May your hardship be followed by ease. 🤲

Michigan’s statute of limitations has become a barrier that many Vista Maria survivors say prevents them from seeking justice for the abuse they allege they endured. While many other states have expanded or eliminated time limits for certain childhood sexual abuse claims, Michigan survivors continue to urge lawmakers to act. Trauma does not disappear with the passage of time. For many survivors, it can take decades to fully understand what happened, find the strength to speak, or feel safe enough to come forward. Justice should not depend on a calendar. We are calling on Michigan’s legislators to stand with survivors, reform the law, and recognize a simple truth: trauma has no expiration date, and neither should the pursuit of justice.

Today, the survivors of Vista Maria stood together in strength, courage, and unity.

Several survivors bravely shared their heartbreaking stories of the mental, physical, and sexual abuse they endured. Their voices were filled with pain, but also with resilience. For far too long, survivors have been ignored, dismissed, and denied the justice they deserve. That ends now.

A sincere thank you to Kiel Reid, candidate for Michigan House Representative in District 88, for standing with survivors today. Your words of encouragement and support meant more than you know, and we are grateful that you took the time to be there and listen.

We also want to thank Dearborn Heights Mayor Mo Baydoun for showing up and standing with us. Your presence sent a powerful message that survivors matter.

Thank you to every member of the media who covered today’s event, especially WDIV Detroit, for helping bring our stories to the public. Awareness is the first step toward accountability.

To every politician in Lansing: We are done waiting. We are done being ignored. We are done watching survivors be denied justice because of outdated laws. Twenty states have already eliminated or reformed their statutes of limitations for survivors of child sexual abuse. Michigan must do the same.

The Larry Nassar scandal exposed the devastating consequences of protecting institutions instead of survivors. We cannot allow history to repeat itself.

We are not going away. We will keep speaking. We will keep fighting. We will keep showing up until the statute of limitations is erased and every survivor has the opportunity to seek justice.

We will not be silenced. We will not be forgotten. And we will not stop.

Vista Maria survivors rally to rewrite Michigan’s sexual assault deadlines

With a new billboard now staring back at Vista Maria’s campus and survivors gathering nearby Thursday morning, a long-running fight over accountability at the Dearborn Heights facility moved into an even more public phase, one aimed as much at Lansing as it is at the institution itself.

Survivors of abuse at Vista Maria, joined by their attorneys, rallied along West Warren Avenue, pushing for changes to Michigan’s statute of limitations for sexual assault cases. Under current Michigan law, survivors who were assaulted as minors generally have until age 28 to pursue certain criminal charges, while adults have a limited window to report.

“There is no expiration date on healing -- there’s no expiration date on fixing things,” said Linda Malone, a survivor of Vista Maria who missed the deadline due to Michigan’s statute of limitations. “There’s no expiration date on getting over it.”

When I first started representing Vista Maria survivors, I knew the legal case would be important. What I didn’t fully appreciate was how important it would be to help rebuild a sense of community.

Many of the women hadn’t seen each other in years. Some had never spoken openly about what happened to them. Watching them walk into a room together, share their stories, laugh, cry, and realize they were no longer carrying this alone is something I’ll never forget.

Being their attorney is an honor. Walking alongside them as they find their voices again is an even greater privilege.

This movement has never been just about a lawsuit. It’s about people. It’s about accountability. It’s about giving survivors the opportunity to be heard and reminding them that what happened to them does not define who they are. Healing comes in various ways and sometimes it requires justice first.

To every survivor who has trusted me with your story: thank you.

Your courage continues to inspire me every single day.

This is why we keep going.
